What is Kawaii Fashion?

Kawaii fashion refers to Japanese fashion styles that embrace a flamboyant expression of “kawaii,” or “cuteness.” Kawaii clothes emphasize child-like, innocent and sweet designs to create bold and adorable looks. The vibrant colors, patterns, textures and styles that appear in manga, films and games are brought to life in kawaii fashion.

While the word and concept of kawaii has a long history in Japan, modern kawaii culture emerged from the shifting social and political mores of the younger generation in the 1970s. During this time, students were protesting against authority and rebelling against restrictive education and traditions. Kawaii culture was born out of this youth movement as a form of self-expression that broke from adult norms and conventions. From cutesy handwriting to cute outfits and cute characters like Hello Kitty, the child-like designs and expressions of kawaii culture reflect the appeal of not growing up. The quirky styles and colors of kawaii fashion channel happiness, innocence, positivity and individual expression.

Kawaii fashion brands like Pink House and Milk popped up in the 1970s, and the Tokyo neighborhood of Harajuku turned into the de facto kawaii fashion capital. Harajuku became the home of subculture fashion, a place where you can spot young people in eye-catching and imaginative looks. Kawaii fashion grew further as Japanese idols and artists experimented with the aesthetic. Eventually kawaii fashion spread to the west, especially in the 2000s when US pop stars like Gwen Stefani adopted the kawaii Harajuku fashion style. What started as a youth movement in Japan turned into a global cultural phenomenon.

Popular Kawaii Clothes for Men & Women

Kawaii clothes are a mesh of cheery and cute aesthetics in upbeat colors. You don’t have to be in maid dresses or Harajuku clothes to dress kawaii. Just about any piece of clothing with child-like appeal can be kawaii, from a bubble gum pink sweatshirt to an anime hoodie to a knit sweater with a Peter Pan collar. The most popular kawaii clothes feature cute anime and cartoon prints, as well as heaps of embellishments.

Popular kawaii clothes for women include bell-shaped A-line dresses cut above the knee, corset tops, puff-sleeve tops, pleated skirts and thigh-high socks. The more extravagantly cute and bubbly the look, the better. Clothes in the style of Japanese school uniforms, as worn by anime characters like Sailor Moon, also ace the kawaii look. Other popular kawaii aesthetic clothes and accessories include tulle skirts, color wigs and pieces with patterned prints, ruffled hemlines, and lace, bow and ribbon details.

Though kawaii fashion is associated more with women’s fashion, men can easily embrace the kawaii aesthetic too with apparel that emphasizes colors and prints. Edgy street fashion items often have elements of kawaii, such as brightly patterned sneakers or oversized hoodies and T-shirts with prints of anime characters. Patterns like checkerboard, stripes and plaid are also popular in men’s kawaii fashion.

How to Style Cute Kawaii Outfits

There are many different ways to style kawaii outfits as there are several substyles under the kawaii fashion umbrella, like Lolita and yume kawaii.

Lolita fashion is perhaps the most well-known kawaii style that combines cuteness with elegance. A Victorian-inspired Lolita ensemble features whimsical and ornate clothes with dainty, doll-like characteristics. A classic Lolita look is usually composed of extravagantly embellished blouses with puffy sleeves, bows, lace and ruffles tucked into bell-shaped skirts. For those feeling extra, layer a corset over the blouse to amplify the feminine appeal. Stockings or knee-high socks with adornments, like ribbons or bow ties, are paired with Mary Janes or other strappy, block-heeled shoes. To complete the Lolita outfit, accessorize with a garnished headdress designed with bows. Sometimes these accessories have attention-grabbing details, like golden bells and a lace trim. For a sweet Lolita look, aim for light and pastel colors and motifs like desserts, fantasy and florals.

A kawaii outfit doesn’t have to be entirely composed of items in candy colors and sweet designs. Some kawaii fashionistas opt for the grungier aesthetic of darker colors and gothic themes. The gothic Lolita look shares the same decadent style and silhouette as classic Lolita but in moody motifs and dark colors like black and maroon. Instead of the dainty beads and ribbons of classic Lolita dresses, the gothic iteration may be accessorized with lace gloves, buckles and chokers, or combined with punk elements like chains and fishnet stockings.

Yume kawaii is a “dream cute” aesthetic with fairytale and fantasy motifs. Filled with pinks, purples and turquoise blues, yume kawaii boasts soft and dreamy looks in a pastel palette. Pastel tops, dresses and flared skirts with charming prints and patterns, like unicorns, cow print, clouds, stars, polka dots and fruits, are popular items for a yume kawaii look. Bows, ribbons and headpieces, like pastel wigs and cute bunny ears, are also often featured in yume kawaii outfits.

Similar to yume kawaii, the fairy kei aesthetic is all about fantasy and pastel but draws from 1980s cartoons and pop culture for a cute vintage style. To create your own laid-back yume kawaii and fairy kei looks, turn to oversized pullovers, tees and sweater dresses in muted pastel colors with sweet prints, and top off with kawaii accessories such as thigh-high socks, a heart-shaped bag or even a teddy bear. For an alternative take to the kawaii aesthetic, pastel goth fashion combines pastel colors with goth and grunge elements.

Another unique way to wear kawaii clothes is through cosplay, which involves dressing up as a character. Popular kawaii cosplay costume ideas include Hatsune Miku, Sailor Moon, Sakura Kinomoto from Cardcaptor Sakura and other magical girl characters – or simply reimagine your favorite character in kawaii fashion!
