How Fashion Reflects Personality in Korean Drama THE GLORY

2 mins read

From 2020’s The World of the Married to last year’s Reborn Rich, we just can’t get enough of revenge dramas from South Korea. Another recent example is the hit Netflix K-drama The Glory from writer Kim Eun-sook and director Ahn Gil-ho. The first season of The Glory debuted on December 30 last year, and the second season will be released on March 10. The drama follows elementary school teacher Moon Dong-eun (Song Hye-kyo) who unleashes a scrupulous revenge plan against her former high school bullies.

Among the five bullies, Park Yeon-jin (Lim Ji-yeon) is the leader of the pack. She and Lee Sa-ra (Kim Hi-eora) are the richest girls in the gang, while Choi Hye-jeong (Cha Joo-young) isn’t as privileged but wishes to hang around the rich. Jeon Jae-joon (Park Sung-hoon) is the wealthy love interest of Yeon-jin, and he often orders fellow baddie Son Myeong-oh (Kim Gun-woo) around.

Living in the lap of luxury, Yeon-jin, Sa-ra and Hye-jeong are clad in flashy and expensive clothing, in contrast to Dong-eun’s dark-colored and subdued style. Find out what each female character’s fashion choices say about her life and personality!

Moon Dong-eun

“I’d like to stay faithful to my rage and vice.”

Teenage dream: Seek revenge on her tormentors.
Style: Dong-eun’s wardrobe is full of long-sleeve tops and long pants to cover the scars that she got as a victim of school bullying. She’s depicted as a somber femme fatale in minimalist and functional clothes like trench coats, pullovers and sneakers in mostly monochrome black or almond colors. Dong-eun’s style suits her hardened personality. It also makes sure she doesn’t attract attention when engaging in clandestine activities, like investigating targets or meeting with her collaborators. As an elementary school teacher, she mostly wears shirts, high-neck tops, shirtdresses, suit jackets and wide-leg dress pants for work.

Park Yeon-jin

“The true value of something is the number written on its price tag.”

Teenage dream: Become a mother and wife while still young and pretty.
Style: According to Yeon-jin’s husband Ha Do-yeong (Jung Sung-il), the two met on a blind date, and she stood out for wearing the least clothes among his dates – but all from Dior. Yeon-jin loves receiving rare and expensive gifts, judging from her reaction when Do-yeong gifts her bejeweled silky green heels. As Yeon-jin is a popular weather presenter, her wardrobe is full of power jackets, tweed dress suits, sleeveless peplum tops, pencil skirts and heels in white or jewel tones. She often wears statement accessories like pearl chokers and luxury handbags. At home, Yeon-jin wraps herself in silky slip dresses and robes.

Lee Sa-ra

“The product quality matters more than the price.”

Teenage dream: Become a painter.
Style: Compared to Yeon-jin and Hye-jeong, Sa-ra cares less about fashion and vanity. Instead of shopping, she prefers to spend time at her art studio. Reflecting her carefree and creative lifestyle, Sa-ra’s clothes are relatively loose-fitted compared to Yeon-jin’s and Hye-jeong’s, and sometimes have paint allover when she’s at the studio. When the occasion calls for it, she can still glam up into prim and proper style. Sa-ra occasionally shows off her artistic flair, such as wearing a Louis Vuitton scarf as a top and pinning her hair bun with a pencil.

Choi Hye-jeong

“I vastly prefer the big ones. I like everything big, you know?”

Teenage dream: Become a flight attendant.
Style: While Yeon-jin is the queen bee, Hye-jeong is the wannabe. Born into a working class family, Hye-jeong yearns to live a luxurious lifestyle. She wishes to marry a rich person, so she can show off her wealth and fit in with her well-off friends. Such intention is evident when Hye-jeong borrows a white Chanel dress suit from her family’s laundry shop to wear for a meet-up. Even after being insulted by her friends, Hye-jeong posts on social media as if she enjoyed the gathering. When choosing a wedding ring, she opts for a ring with the biggest gem, so she can one-up Yeon-jin.
