Recreating Outfits from NewJeans’s “Right Now” and “Supernatural”

3 mins read

NewJeans is back with two summer anthems for 2024. The five-member K-pop girl group has dropped their first Japanese EP Supernatural, with MVs for tracks Right Now and Supernatural released on June 16 and June 21, respectively. Seamlessly combining English, Japanese and Korean lyrics, both tracks innovatively entwine Japanese cultural elements through collaborating with Japanese contemporary artist Takashi Murakami for Right Now and taking inspiration from the Japanese city pop genre for Supernatural.

NewJeans is known for retro-themed concepts, so it’s no surprise that the creative direction of Supernatural has once again turned to 90s and Y2K pop culture for music and fashion inspiration. Read on to recreate NewJeans’s nostalgic style!

Right Now

Flitting between real-life scenes and 2D-animated adventures, Right Now’s MV sees the return of NewJeans’s PowerPuff Girl personas that debuted last year in the MV for New Jeans. This time, the MV follows the girls’ fretful deliberations over Hanni’s unread texts to a love interest, and then transitions into a 2D world as they search for a love potion in the psychedelic flower-filled world of Takashi Murakami. The Japanese artist designed characters for each member, giving them Murakami-style varicoloured anime eyes. The members’ IRL outfits with retro flair match the girlish aesthetics of the video.

Hanni dons a colorful summer-ready outfit that pairs a pastel blue and yellow baby tee with frayed light blue denim shorts. Hanni’s look showcases various pops of color: her red hair is adorned with a bright red hair clip, and her light blue faux nails are embellished with 3D designs. She tops it all off with casual pink flats.

Danielle exudes sunny positivity with her yellow-themed look. Her curly blonde locks frame a bright yellow off-shoulder top layered over a flared lace minidress. Black yoga shorts underneath give the outfit a sporty chic finish, while strappy red and pink ballet flats tie the outfit together with balletcore charm.

Hyein’s comfy get-up teams a bright blue all-over print cardigan and matching crop top with a white tiered maxi skirt. She picks kidcore accessories like a sparkly tiara and beaded necklace. Her chunky brown mules radiate relaxed vibes.

Haerin goes for an all-blue outfit, matching all the way up to her blue contacts. She wears a square-neck long-sleeved dark blue top and teal hotpants accessorized with a black and white checkered belt. A blue headband gives her look cute and playful character.

Minji leans into a Y2K-inspired silhouette with a blue gingham dress and bootcut jeans combo. She pairs a white lace-hemmed camisole under the dress. Her simple look is finished with a colorful beaded drop necklace.

Supernatural

The song Supernatural is inspired by the new jack swing and Japanese city pop genres, with its funky electronic bassline, swinging rhythm and retro flourishes. The music video is bookended with scenes in old-school 4:3 TV aspect ratio to set the tone, and urban night scenes exuding city pop vibes. NewJeans’s fashion in the Supernatural Part 1 MV radiates Y2K boy band aesthetic, with baggy hip-hop-adjacent looks reminiscent of The Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC.

To get any squad looking like NewJeans, try fully coordinated white ensembles like their outfits in the MV during the dance break. Wear matching printed white T-shirts and baggy cargo pants. Get white windbreaker jackets but change up the way each person wears it: throw it over the T-shirt, tie it around the waist or hang it on the shoulders. Complete the matching looks with white headbands and black sneakers.

The members also swap into different looks throughout the MV, giving us plenty of Y2K street-style outfit inspo.

Hanni exudes hip-hop cool with her black cap layered over a black paisley headscarf. She pairs a black tank top with gray sweatpants and white sneakers for a casual look.
