Recreating NewJeans’s Outfits from “OMG”

2 mins read

Boasting Y2K elements in both sound and style, K-pop rookie group NewJeans made a splash in August last year with their debut EP New Jeans, an introduction to the quintet’s youthful coming-of-age concept. Five months later, NewJeans returned on January 2 with the single album OMG, led by the title track of the same name.

Previously, in the girl group’s music videos of Attention and Hype Boy, we see the members flip their straight black hair and groove to the 90s-style tunes while flaunting minimalist makeup looks with retro-influenced fashion to match. The nostalgic aesthetic carries through in the new music video of OMG, an upbeat R&B song mixed with trap beats and garage-inspired rhythms.

While OMG continues to expand the South Korean girl group’s refreshing and warm throwback soundscape, the accompanying music video delves deep into the complicated sentiments of teenage romance. Set in a psychiatric hospital, the MV portrays the members as lovesick patients struggling with the feelings that come along with this condition. Each NewJeans member is impacted by this state of mind in different ways, as seen in their distinctive personas in the MV. Read on to see how the members dress according to their personas!

Hanni

Punctuated with an uncanny and eerie atmosphere throughout, the music video begins with the members appearing as patients at a group therapy session. Hanni kick-starts the conversation by declaring that she is Siri, the virtual assistant behind all Apple devices. In line with her imagined identity, Hanni is clad in a signature Steve Jobs-style outfit consisting of a black long-sleeve turtleneck top, blue jeans, gray trainers and round glasses. The K-pop idol chooses a baggier version of the bottoms to refresh her look with retro appeal.

Hyein

Maknae Hyein believes that she is a fairy tale protagonist, be it the servant-turned-princess Cinderella, the poor Little Match Girl or the damsel-in-distress Aurora from Sleeping Beauty. While lying on a bed surrounded by flowers and waiting for her Prince Charming, Hyein is decked in a black and pink gown featuring contemporary details, such as asymmetric sleeves, a gathered neckline and multi-layered skirts. In her hair, she adds a silver butterfly-shaped hair clip with spiky wings for a gothic touch.

Haerin

Known for her feline-like facial features, Haerin imagines herself as a cat in the music video. Epitomizing the calming and mysterious characteristics of cats, Haerin expresses herself through art in the MV. In a scene where she is doodling a cat on an ambulance, the K-pop star wears a contrast-trim pullover embellished with striking logos and patterned wide-leg jeans with a skirt-style overlay. Haerin puts on black earmuffs designed with devil wings and styles her hair with a rhinestone-encrusted snowflake-shaped hair clip to up the whimsical appeal.

Danielle

While others are preoccupied with their imaginary roles, Danielle breaks the fourth wall and insists that they are all NewJeans members filming for a music video. As they dance to the song in different settings including a living room space, Danielle is clad in a colorful cozy ensemble centered on an oversized color-block hoodie. She teams the top with khaki relaxed shorts, striped leg warmers and black sneakers adorned with smiley face prints. A gray cat ear beanie completes Danielle’s adorable casual look.

Minji

Other than donning personalized outfits that highlight their imaginary identities, the NewJeans members also stick to their Y2K style with denim-and-white combos. Each member pairs a white crop top and baggy denim pants with different kitschy early aughts-inspired add-ons. Minji’s take on the classic combo comprises a logo-embellished baby tee and black wide-leg cargo jeans contrasted with a thick white belt. The K-pop idol incorporates multiple animal-themed items into her look, including a bunny ear-accented hat, rabbit-shaped backpack and frog ring. Yellow low-tops and statement hoop earrings seal Minji’s colorful outfit.
