Eco-Friendly Beauty Brands

Happy Earth Day! Today we’re going to look at K-Beauty brands that are eco-friendly. What does that entail, you may ask? Only brands that use sustainable packaging and ingredients that aren’t harmful to the environment have made it to this list!

For an eco-friendly brand, ingredients are important not only for your skin but also for the environment. It’s essential to look at the ingredient’s life cycle – whether it’s eco-friendly in the harvesting and manufacturing processes, as well as when it’s being used by you, the consumers!

Many ingredients in cosmetic products, including parabens, oxybenzone and synthetic fragrances, have been linked to harmful effects in the environment. Parabens are a type of preservative associated with negative effects on marine mammals, while oxybenzone, a common ingredient in sunscreen, is believed to harm coral reefs. Chemicals in synthetic fragrances, which have been found in the tissues of fish and other wildlife, can make them ill.

Packaging: AROMATICA is committed to ensuring its products have as little impact on the environment as possible. For its packaging, the brand uses recycled glass and PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastic. AROMATICA is continuously evolving and improving by looking at every aspect of the packaging. Recently, the brand discontinued pump applicators, which are made of PE (polyethylene) and PP (polypropylene) plastic and springs that can’t be recycled easily, and instead switched to PP flip caps that are easier to recycle. In fact, AROMATICA’s Reviving Rose Infusion has made a complete switch to sustainable glass packaging made of 90% recycled glass, and it’s packaged with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified paper.

AROMATICA is also vegan-friendly and cruelty-free.

Packaging: ROVECTIN packages its skin care products with biodegradable recycled paper printed in soy ink. Why is soy ink better than regular ink? Soy ink can be removed much more easily, which makes recycling faster and minimizes toxic emission during the process. If you have soy allergies, fret not. The production of soy ink strips it of the proteins that can cause allergic reactions!

EcoFriendly Beauty Brands - rovectin clean

Ingredients: The founder of ROVECTIN vowed to help his sister ease at least a few of the side effects of her cancer treatment, including dry skin and skin barrier deterioration. That’s why the brand is especially gentle on the skin. ROVECTIN’s products are free of parabens, chemical dyes, synthetic fragrances, petrochemicals, formaldehyde, drying alcohols and animal-derived ingredients.

Rovectin has been approved by The Vegan Society and is cruelty-free. Read more about ROVECTIN here!

Packaging: All of PURITO’s products are packaged in environmentally friendly recycled paper, but it doesn’t stop there. The packaging is also multi-purpose! Instead of printing out a separate sheet of instructions, the packaging itself features detailed tips with the brand’s signature PURITOON illustrations – a major bonus in my book!

EcoFriendly Beauty Brands - Purito no harmful ingredients list

Ingredients: Some skin care brands have long lists of complicated ingredients. That is not the case for PURITO. In fact, PURITO has a long list of ingredients that its products DON’T have. Most notably, its products don’t have oxybenzone, an ingredient harmful to coral reefs. If you’re looking for sunscreen when you hit the beach, PURITO’s got one for your skin type!

PURITO is also cruelty-free and vegan. Want to learn more about PURITO? Read its Brand Spotlight here!

Packaging: The K-Beauty brand innisfree has started many initiatives to ensure its products and practices are environmentally friendly. The brand has an Eco-Recycling Program to encourage consumers to drop off empty containers at its stores. The packaging is then upcycled into other store merchandise. To encourage people to use handkerchiefs instead of tissue paper, innisfree also has an annual Eco-Handkerchief Campaign, which gifts hankies with the purchase of selected limited edition products.
