Ingredient Focus: Soothe Your Skin with Tea Tree

Estimated Reading Time: 2 minutes

Back during my early teen years, I used to turn to my mom for advice when dealing with acne, and she always recommended using tea tree. While there are plenty of other acne treatments available, such as acne patches, tea tree is still one of the most effective skin care ingredients that helps purify and soothe blemish-prone skin. Here’s everything you need to know about this ingredient:

Benefits of Tea Tree

You can turn to salicylic acid to treat acne but tea tree is an effective natural ingredient that also fights blemishes. If you prefer using skin care products formulated with natural ingredients, then tea tree is a great option.

Tea tree offers antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties while helping to reduce redness and soothe irritated skin. When looking for tea tree-infused products, you’ll usually come across two varieties of tea tree: tea tree oil and tea tree extract. While they both share similarities in treating acne-prone and irritated skin, tea tree oil is more concentrated and should be applied sparingly.

What skin type is tea tree best for?

Tea tree is suitable for all skin types including sensitive skin, but those with oily or acne-prone skin will benefit the most from this skin care ingredient. If you have acne-prone skin that’s also sensitive and want to opt for tea tree oil, remember to do a patch test first to see if your skin reacts negatively. The same advice goes for those with a damaged skin barrier as a compromised skin barrier means your skin can easily freak out. So do remember to tread lightly!

Skin Care Products with Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil works best when used as an acne spot treatment. Whenever you notice new blemishes, apply a few drops of tea tree oil to help kill any acne-causing bacteria. Applying tea tree oil on active blemishes also helps them heal faster and prevents the formation of dark spots. Just remember not to pick at your acne or you’ll risk aggravating it and could even end up with a pesky post-acne scar!

To use tea tree oil, add a few drops of it on either a cotton bud or pad and apply it directly on your blemishes. Do this after your cleansing and toning steps, and let the tea tree oil soak in properly before applying your serum or moisturizer. Tea tree oil can make your skin dry so be sure to moisturize well when using this ingredient. Follow with a hyaluronic acid-based product to prevent your skin from flaking and to help boost your skin’s hydration levels.

Skin Care Products with Tea Tree Extract

If you just want to keep your acne at bay and prevent new acne from forming, opt for a cleanser, toner, essence or serum that’s formulated with tea tree extract. Incorporating skin care products with tea tree extract also helps restore calm to your complexion.

You can find tea tree extract in the form of a cleanser, toner, essence, facial mask and ampoules. Personally, I love to treat my skin to a sheet mask that’s packed with tea tree extract to help soothe my skin whenever I’m dealing with hormonal breakouts.
