Ingredient Focus: Squalane

Besides hyaluronic acid (one of my all-time favorite skin care ingredients), squalane is another ingredient my skin absolutely loves. It’s easy to incorporate squalane-infused products into your skin care routine all-year round, no matter the weather, as this ingredient hydrates your complexion while keeping your skin barrier healthy.

So how can your skin benefit from squalane? Here’s what you need to know – plus an intro to some great squalane products to add to your skin care routine:

Squalane is an emollient and a derivative of squalene, which is naturally found in our body’s lipids. Squalane is commonly used in skin care products since it doesn’t oxidize like squalene does, making it a more stable ingredient with a longer shelf life.

Just like hyaluronic acid, the amount of squalene in our body diminishes as we age so turning to skin care products is a great way to feed your skin with this moisturizing ingredient. Squalane is similar to hyaluronic acid as they’re both hydrating ingredients and both help draw in moisture from the air. The difference between the two is that hyaluronic acid mainly attracts moisture while squalane traps that moisture in your skin and minimizes moisture loss.

Squalane works best for dry skin or those with a damaged skin barrier but it’s a good-for-all-skin-types kind of skin care ingredient, even for acne-prone or sensitive skin. Since it has a lighter consistency than squalene, it works great for oily skin even if you use it throughout summer as it won’t clog your pores and it helps balance your sebum production.

If you easily react when you try new products, make sure to do a patch test first.

Do you have dry patches or premature fine lines? Squalane is the answer to these skin woes. As an emollient, squalane works by smoothing out your fine lines and wrinkles to give your complexion a soft and smooth appearance. Squalane is also extremely hydrating and soothing so if you have active blemishes, reach for a squalane-infused product to help calm your skin and reduce any signs of redness or inflammation.

No matter what your skin type is, it’s important to always keep your skin moisturized to prevent blemishes, signs of aging, and damage to your skin barrier. If you want to wake up to a plump and supple complexion every morning, it’s worth adding a squalane product into your night time routine.

You can find squalane in a variety of skin care products including cleansers, serums, face masks, facial oils and creams. To get the most out of this ingredient, I recommend opting for squalane oil or cream for more effective results. Here are a few squalane products you can find at YesStyle:
