Foods to Eat for Clear Skin

Remember, beauty begins on the inside. So if you want clearer, blemish-free and spot-free skin, healthy eating habits are crucial. It’s not enough to follow a skin care routine to keep pesky zits away. I myself struggled with acne even way past my teenage years, but after tweaking my diet and lifestyle habits, I started to see real change in my skin.

If you’re constantly breaking out, or you feel that your skin care routine isn’t working, try incorporating these foods into your diet to keep your skin clear. 

BERRIES

Berries, such as blueberries, strawberries, raspberries or goji berries, are packed with antioxidants that help protect your skin against free radicals. They’re also full of fiber, which helps regulate your blood sugar levels – plus they’re great for breakfast! Kickstart your mornings with a berry smoothie or use berries as oatmeal toppings. 

TURMERIC

Turmeric offers plenty of benefits for skin. It reduces inflammation and is great for fighting acne. Turmeric is a natural antiseptic so it helps keep bacteria from spreading, therefore reducing your breakouts. Try it in a cup of tea or blend it into a smoothie.

AVOCADO

Can’t get enough of avocado toast? Get ready to eat even more of it because avocados are great for your skin! Avocados are rich in fatty acids and its natural oils deeply hydrate the skin, making them the perfect food additions for those with dry or dehydrated skin.

GREEN VEGETABLES

In order to have clear skin, and get your skin to glow from within, you need to eat lots of leafy greens like kale, spinach, arugula or broccoli. These green vegetables are loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber that work wonders for your skin. Not only will eating green vegetables keep your skin clear, it’ll give you younger-looking skin too.

TOMATOES

Rich in vitamins A, C and K, tomatoes are ideal to add to your diet if you’re trying to clear up your acne. Tomatoes also contain lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that defends your skin against aging.

DAIRY-FREE MILK

I still remember the first thing I changed in my diet when I was trying to get rid of my hormonal acne; I swapped out dairy milk for dairy-free milk alternatives. Since giving up dairy milk, my complexion has become a lot clearer and I break out less.

Milk can spike up your blood sugar and create an imbalance in your hormone levels, which leads to oilier skin and clogged pores. So for clearer skin, switch to non-dairy milk instead. Almond, oat, rice, coconut and cashew milk are all good substitutes!

While following a healthy diet, try and reduce your intake of sugary snacks as high amounts of sugar in your diet can cause inflammation in your body, which increases acne. You may not see immediate results but be patient – it takes time for your body and skin to adjust. Once you’ve made it through the first month, it’ll get easier!
