Favorite Makeup Looks from 2019 K-Pop Comebacks

Estimated Reading Time: 4 minutes

K-pop stans had a whirlwind of a year. Our faves smashed records with jaw-dropping concepts and music videos, complete with on-point outfits and makeup. Girl groups have been especially amazing this year, and as much fun as I’ve had mixing their off-stage and on-stage fashion on Style Files, I haven’t had the chance to explore their makeup. That’s why I’ve compiled my top ten favorite makeup looks from girl group music videos in 2019!

(g)i-dle's soojin - i made, senorita

(G)I-DLE’s Soojin – Senorita

Fearless bright colors cover every inch of (G)I-DLE’s music video for Senorita, which is bathed in a warm color palette with splashes of cool blues and purples for contrast. Soojin’s look has a lovely watercolor effect. The yellow and peach shades on her lids and lower lash line blend well with her subtle peach-colored cheeks and deep coral lipstick in 2019’s Pantone Color of the Year. The defining detail of this look is the slightly smudged blue dot right in the middle of her lower lash line, which brings attention to her beauty mark in the same area!

blackpink's lisa - kill this love

BlackPink’s Lisa – Kill This Love

BlackPink has so many iconic looks in their Kill This Love music video that choosing just one is particularly difficult. Jennie donned amazing styles, from her glitter cat-eye to her pink and metallic eye makeup. However, Lisa’s monochrome makeup look is the most memorable. The daring, vibrant fuchsia pink eye shadow stands out against her trademark blonde fringe, making the color really pop. She doesn’t shy away and go minimal with the rest of her eye makeup, even opting for a huge, dramatic winged look with thin black liner. Lisa’s matching matte lips with incredibly crisp edges complete the whole look and solidify her place as one of K-pop’s leading style icons.

somi - birthday

Somi – Birthday

The much-anticipated debut of Produce 101’s first season winner did not disappoint. Jeon Somi officially debuted in June with her single Birthday and served us fans with amazing outfits and equally amazing makeup! My favorite from the music video has to be the simple floating white graphic liner. This has been one of the trendiest minimal makeup techniques this year, and it’s refreshing to see it off the runway and in a K-pop music video. The clean white lines are accentuated with low-key lashes and baby pink lips.

chung ha - flourishing, snapping

Chung Ha – Snapping

Chung Ha’s MV for Snapping is not the most colorful one in her discography, but it is probably the most mature and unique in terms of styling choices and makeup. She recreates the trendy faux beauty mark with faux pearls artfully placed down her cheeks, further accentuated by smoky copper eye shadow blended with a small cat-eye flick. The singer finishes off her look with striking glossy red lips that ooze confidence. The on-trend, incredibly detailed look truly showcases how just two years after her debut, she’s already flourishing.

sunmi - noir

Sunmi – Noir

This year, Sunmi pulled out all the stops when it comes to creativity. She released not one, not two, but a million amazing makeup lewks that left us all, for lack of a better word, #shook. From her e-girl aesthetic in Noir to her show-stopping watercolor makeup in LALALAY, picking a fave is definitely a hard task. However, her look for Noir takes the cake with cut-out orange hearts on her cheek surrounded by mini blue and pink hearts. She also has matte baby pink lids and metallic pink lips. All in all, this definitely goes down as one of the most unique, Insta-worthy looks in K-pop.

exid's LE - me&you

EXID’s LE – ME&YOU

The defining visual ingredient in LE’s makeup is her purple lashes! Although it’s easy to miss, after binge-watching EXID’s MV for ME&YOU, you definitely won’t overlook it again. The purple shade brings in a neon-like effect and gives a unique finishing touch to the rapper’s go-to sultry, smoky eyes framed with slightly smudged gray eyeliner. Of course, LE doesn’t stop there. She paints her lips a hot orange-red shade with a glossy finish that stands out under the strobing lights in their music video.

red velvet's wendy - the reve festival day 2, umpah umpah

Red Velvet’s Wendy – Umpah Umpah

While Zimzalabim is chock full of vibrant outfits, Umpah Umpah is the one that has on-point makeup! The girls have splashes of color on their lids and cheeks to match the fun, summery sets. The sweet, fruity shades are what I associate with the girl group’s “Velvet” side, and Wendy’s unapologetically vibrant shades from lids to lips had me replaying the video over and over again. The warm orange shades contrast well against her blue gingham two-piece outfit. This look makes me long for summer to come faster!

twice's dahyun - feel special

Twice’s Dahyun – Feel Special

Twice went all out for their latest comeback Feel Special! From Chaeyoung’s white eyeliner to Mina’s sequined lids, there are so many makeup looks to choose from. Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2020 is Classic Blue, but trendsetter Dahyun already sported the color way back in September, and that’s why her look is my fave from the MV! As a sucker for a full head-to-toe monochrome look, I love how the blue, glittery eye shadow matches her equally blue, glittery outfit. The shadow’s clean edges are accentuated by a matte peach base and gradated black corners – an easy yet daring look to cop for the coming year!

brown eyed girls' narsha - re_vive, wonder woman

Brown Eyed Girls’ Narsha – Wonder Woman

Brown Eyed Girls’ Narsha always has eye-catching makeup looks and her latest look in their Wonder Woman MV is no different. In fact, she takes it up a notch. Narsha’s dramatic red eye shadow, complete with large fluttery falsies, is accentuated with heavily contoured cheeks and a deep red blush. Her glossy red pout, applied in a retro ombre style with darker edges, is given the same dramatic attention. Along with her black pixie cut, the dark shades in this look take major inspo from 1920s silent movie stars, which totally appeals to my love of all things retro and extra!

Mamamoo's WheeIn - reality in black, hip vector illustration

Mamamoo’s Whee In – HIP

Mamamoo’s “4 universes” concept is bound to have numerous enviable and unique makeup looks. However, Whee In’s whole vibe as a painter in the 3rd universe took me by surprise. Dressed in a clean black and white suit, she flaunts middle-parted tresses in blue (Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year). Breaking a couple of makeup rules, Whee In takes a fun, artsy route with purple brows! Perhaps this is the norm in the 3rd universe, but purple eyebrows are a daring approach one should try in the coming new year!
