10 Layering Looks from K-Drama WHEN THE CAMELLIA BLOOMS

Estimated Reading Time: 3 minutes

KBS2’s romance and suspense drama When The Camellia Blooms continues to top the viewership rating charts, leaving its competitors far behind with a continuously growing double-digit viewership in Korea since episode 6.

The 20-episode drama owes its success partly to its serial killer subplot, but also to the skillful acting of Gong Hyo-jin, who plays single mom and restaurant owner Dong-baek. Besides dealing with the threat of an unknown killer, she must fight against unwanted attention from men and bullying from their wives to survive in a small town. Luckily, Dong-baek gets some help from Yong-sik (Kang Ha-neul), a police officer who falls in love with her immediately.

While waiting for the finale which will air on November 21, let’s take a trip down memory lane and revisit some of Dong-baek’s best sartorial moments!

Drama stills from Netflix

Look 1

This is exactly how a mori girl should look. The muted fern green tee and buttoned orange-brown jumper dress exude a spring mood, while the woven hat and almond-colored Birkenstocks are just picnic-worthy.

1. HATHOT – Straw Bucket Hat / 2. Envy Look – Button-Front Jumper Dress with Belt /
3. Shalala – Lettering Elbow-Sleeve T-Shirt / 4. Belbie – Lace Paneled Patterned Mules

Look 2

A failsafe option to looking youthful without trying too hard is to wear denim dungarees. Dong-baek refreshes the classic style with a pink checkered shirt and casual Velcro-strap sandals. The rolled-up sleeves and dungarees add industrial vibe and practicality.

1. Equingdom – Denim Dungarees / 2. Kawaii Fairyland – Long-Sleeve Checkered Shirt / 3. Brightsea – Velcro-Strap Flat Sandals

Look 3

Just when you think Dong-baek will stay demure and boyish with jumper dresses and dungarees, she shows up in sexy yellow shorts and a cute striped knit crossbody! This look is rounded off with a breezy white shirt, white sneakers and a contrasting denim vest.

1. Tanee – Buttoned Denim Vest / 2. Lomond – Elbow-Sleeve Lace Trim Blouse / 3. Yako – Side-Zip Denim Shorts /
4. Nautilus Bags – Patterned Knit Crossbody Bag / 5. Solejoy – Platform Sneakers

Look 4

Aside from denims, jumper dresses and dungarees, Dong-baek also has a soft spot for ditsy florals. In this outfit, she strikes a balance between boyish and girly with a feminine floral camisole worn over the same white shirt from Look 3. Indigo blue pants give a dynamic color-blocking effect.

1. Whoosh – Set: Floral Camisole + Short-Sleeve Mesh Top / 2. Maisee – Plain Straight-Cut Pants / 3. BAGSHOW – Woven Tote Bag

Look 5

A beanie can look cute or staid, depending on what you pair it with. Dong-baek cleverly partners it with off-white dungarees, mint green socks and (again) Birkenstocks for a smart and energetic look.

1. SPADAM – Two-Tone Knit Beanie / 2. Fashion Street – Cropped Denim Dungarees /
3. Balak – Couple Matching Elbow-Sleeve Tie-Dye Lettering T-Shirt / 4. Saysmith – Plain Socks /
5. Sunsteps – Buckled Faux Leather Slide Sandals

Look 6

This look combines all of Dong-baek’s favorite fashion items, including denim dungarees, ditsy floral shirt, crossbody bag, eye-catching socks and Birkenstocks. No wonder a significant moment needs to happen!

1. Glotto – Long-Sleeve Floral Chiffon Blouse / 2. Romantica – Denim Pinafore Dress /
3. Travelholic – Retro Faux Leather Crossbody Bag / 4. Cloud Femme – Crew Socks

Look 7

I was originally skeptical about this look since there’s just too much happening, but it does epitomize her style. The green floral longline shirt is already quite loud, and the drama is amplified further with a contrasting red canvas fanny pack. As if that’s not enough, she layers the shirt above a demure white tee and skinny jeans. At one point, she even wears an apron above all these. The updo, sunnies and hand-carry bucket bag just scream extra, but the outcome is surprisingly put together and has a unique flair to it. In case you’re wondering, she wears navy Converse-style sneakers for this outfit.

1. AOKI – Floral Print Long Shirt / 2. Nothic – Nylon Belt Bag / 3. Lover’s Kiss – Insulated Canvas Bucket Bag

Look 8

This look is what I’d describe as a gentle mom or bookworm look. Again, ditsy floral blouse and indigo blue pants are put into play, but this time they’re wrapped up with a beige cable-knit vest for a more subdued effect. Dong-baek completes the look with matching beige Birkenstocks and a color-popping mint green knit bucket bag.

1. Algar – Cable-Knit Vest / 2. monroll – Long-Sleeve Floral Blouse / 3. Cat Palace – Woven Crossbody Bag

Look 9

This youthful look from Dong-baek boasts a coral buttoned jacket, Breton stripe tee and subtly checkered pencil skirt. The outfit is complete with her staple crossbody, crew socks and Birkenstocks, so you know it’s her even from afar!

1. Champi – Buttoned Denim Jacket / 2. Cattie – Long-Sleeved Striped T-Shirt /
3. JUSTONE – Slit-Front Checkered Pencil Skirt / 4. Faneur – Faux Leather Bucket Bag

Look 10

As the timeline moves from summer to winter, we see Dong-baek switching from vests to sweaters. A floral base layer, white socks and peasant shoes make all the difference in this seemingly plain outfit.

1. Penguin Island – Plain Sweater / 2. Rorah – Floral Shirt / 3. Sparrow Farm – Espadrille Slip-Ons
