When Taemin debuted in 2008 as a member of SHINee, the then 14-year-old idol set many noona’s hearts aflutter. I’ve bopped along to many of SHINee’s iconic songs like Replay, Hello, Lucifer and Ring Ding Dong, so I was super excited when SM Entertainment revealed the dream boy group of every SM stan: SuperM. Besides Taemin, SuperM includes members from SM boy groups EXO and NCT, and they’ve recently ventured into the US market with the hit single Jopping.
Taemin’s daring approach to music is also evident in his clothing choices, which makes him such a pleasure to style and illustrate for this Style Files installment! The individual pieces are timeless, but with a little bit of styling and Taemin’s unique aura, the outfit is on-trend and chic.
A double-breasted blazer with peak lapels is a classic silhouette, but this piece comes in a refreshing teal shade – a color that Taemin rocked when he promoted his third Japanese mini album FAMOUS earlier this year. Not seen often in menswear, teal is a fun and unique shade that really highlights the singer’s individuality.
Underneath the blazer is another winter wardrobe staple, the turtleneck. Not only does its yellow shade contrast the suit’s teal, the high neck brings a clear color-blocked effect against the blazer’s peak lapels. The pinstriped turtleneck also brings the outfit to a more casual level.
The singer is usually seen in a clean-cut, fitted British-style blazer, but I’ve chosen an American-style sack suit for a more loose-fitting cut to accentuate the chest rig, the main feature of the outfit. The accessory, which made its mainstream debut in street-style looks at Seoul & Tokyo’s F/W Fashion Weeks this year, elevates the whole outfit! Its industrial elements are daring, and its straps cinch in the blazer’s boxy cut.
To keep the whole look sleek, I’ve added minimal accessories. The chunky rings complement the chest rig’s metallic detailing without drawing too much attention away from the rest of the outfit.
For a fresh take on Taemin’s usual skinny jeans, I’ve chosen to style him with cropped pinstriped pants instead. The white pants still have a close-fitting cut, but its looser design ensures a smoother and more tailored silhouette than skinny jeans.
The clean-cut look is finished off with brown Oxfords accented with minimal broguing. Its brown color and pointed toe design draw the eyes down from the vertical pinstriped print of the pants to the shoes’ burnished tips, elongating the silhouette.
