Lotus is the star ingredient of Korean skin care brand THE PURE LOTUS. The brand uses extracts specifically from the pure white lotus that grows in the pond at Beophwasa, a thousand-year-old temple on Jeju Island. I’ve already explored how Jeju is a hot spot for natural Korean skin care and I’ve used a couple of products with ingredients extracted from the island, but this is my first time trying an entire skin care routine of Jeju products!
There are many reasons I’ve been meaning to try this brand ever since YesStyle started carrying it. One of the reasons is the packaging. Kang Myeong-sun, who is renowned for her lotus paintings, is behind all the beautiful illustrations on the packaging. Lovingly called the “lotus artist” of Jeju Island, she even makes the paper that she paints on!
Lotus extracts are known for their anti-aging properties. That’s where the second reason comes in. Although I’m still in my early 20s, many dermatologists suggest that it’s better to start early with our anti-aging skin care routines.
The box features its trademark lotus artwork while the Jeju Botanical pH Balancing Cleanser itself is packaged in a minimalist opaque bottle with a flat pump. The applicator makes it easy to dispense the product even when my hands are wet. The cleanser is to be applied twice: first on dry skin before being rinsed off with lukewarm water, then once again for a more thorough cleanse.
The cleanser felt like gel initially during my first application on dry skin, and it didn’t foam up much. When rinsed off with lukewarm water, it started feeling creamy. The first cleanse didn’t remove all of my makeup, but the second cleanse successfully got rid of all of it. Due to its low pH formula and soothing gel-like texture, the cleanser didn’t make my skin feel tight afterwards. However, when I wear particularly heavy, waterproof makeup, I’d need a triple cleanse to remove everything.
Packaged in a black and opaque white minimalist container similar to that of the cleanser, the cream is more off-white in color. The Jeju Lotus Leaf Revitalizing Cream is specially formulated for anti-wrinkle benefits, and it’s also infused with redwood evergreen oak extract for antioxidant effects.
The cream felt rather thick on first application, but it wasn’t sticky and left my skin feeling smooth and moisturized. It also had a subtle cooling effect. My skin reacted well to the cream. Although I don’t have wrinkles yet, my face and neck had a more refined texture after a fortnight.
Lack of sleep, stress and a terrible diet (mostly chocolate, bubble tea and coffee) have contributed to making my skin look dull, with patches of dryness on otherwise extremely oily skin. The changing of the seasons also contributes to skin troubles, and once winter sets in, my skin will definitely jump frequently from combination to oily.
Thankfully, the Lotus Leaf Extract Sleeping Pack protects skin from external aggressors, moisturizes effectively and can help bring my dull complexion back to life. The added ingredient of shea butter helps form a protective barrier over skin for long-lasting hydration.
I’ve never been a big fan of sleeping packs since more often than not, they leave my skin looking incredibly greasy. This sleeping pack has a lighter formula in comparison to the cream. If you have oily skin, it’s not recommended to use sleeping packs every night, so I used it once or twice a week. By the end of the routine, my skin was restored to health, and I even noticed that my pores look less visible.
I had never considered adding face mists to my skin care routine, but a fellow editor suggested – nay, insisted – that I NEEDED this. I put the suggestion on the back burner for a while but caved in for the Jeju Lotus Leaf & Camellia Mist. It promises to hydrate and strengthen your skin barrier while relieving stressed skin. Camellia extract is also infused in the mist, and its antioxidant properties are great for combating signs of aging.
One of the reasons I’m hesitant to incorporate face mists into my beauty routine is that I’m worried it’ll smudge my makeup. Thankfully, that wasn’t the case. The nozzle delivered a very fine spritz of the formula which soaked into my skin very quickly. The lightweight formula also only has a barely noticeable fragrance.
I now find myself reaching for the mist, especially in the afternoon, not only to de-stress but to cool down as well!
THE PURE LOTUS skin care line mainly appeals to me for its gentle formulas, super subtle fragrance and suitability for all skin types. But will I use any of the products long term?
Though I’ve flirted with gel-like cleansers for a while, I have consistently stuck with foam cleansers. However, I’m excited to try out this extremely gentle and moisturizing cleanser a bunch more!
The mist is now a welcome addition to my skin care routine as it gives my skin a refreshing pick-me-up, especially on those busy, sleepless days! The cream is also a big yes for me, because it’s completely fragrance-free.
Surprisingly, my favorite from the brand is the sleeping pack. Who would’ve guessed that! I loved how it left my skin feeling moisturized and fresh in the morning, with no icky, oily feeling. I’ll definitely be using it twice a week once the weather starts getting dryer.
