Real Barrier: Cool and Soothing Skin Care Review

The YS Beauty Lab

There are many great things about the summer – warm weather, the beach, ice cream… The list goes on and on. But for folks like me who suffer from eczema, summer isn’t exactly my favorite season. The summer heat can be a bit of a pain for all skin types in general. If you’re oily, you get oilier. If your skin is sensitive, it becomes more prone to inflammation. And for those with dry skin, retaining moisture becomes even more difficult, especially when you can’t use heavy moisturizers and creams.

Real Barrier skin care has one main goal: to support and fortify skin’s natural barrier. An advanced line under paraben-free brand ATOPALM, Real Barrier is the fruit of the founder’s mission to develop hypoallergenic formulas to relieve his son’s lifelong dermatitis.

ATOPALM is known for its patented Multi-Lamellar Emulsion (MLE) technology. By mimicking the skin’s lipid layer, MLE speeds up the skin’s natural balancing and recovery abilities. Real Barrier also utilizes MLE in its line of products, along with added moisturizing components such as hyaluronic acid and ceramide.

Cleansing Oil Balm

What is it? Gentle and moisturizing oil-based cleansing balm that melts away makeup, dirt and impurities.

Unlike regular balms, this one felt more like a sugar scrub at first, but as I gradually massaged it into my skin, it melted into a silky oil layer. When wiped off with a cotton pad, it left a soft finish that sat between oily and silky. When I washed it off with water as opposed to wiping, it left my skin soft and without any feeling of tautness.

Does it work? Firstly, it’s gentle and didn’t cause even the slightest discomfort or irritation. I used it twice to ensure a thorough removal of my regular day makeup, and it even cleansed off really pigmented lipstick in one go. In comparison, my usual oil cleansers would require at least two to three rounds of cleansing to get rid of dark lipstick stains.

Aqua Soothing Gel Cream Set Icy Summer Limited Edition

What is it? This limited edition set consists of a travel-sized toner, a sheet mask and a gel cream, all from Real Barrier’s Aqua Soothing range. The products come inside a zipper cooler bag that seems to help maintain a cool temperature for its contents. All items in this set are advertised to have a cooling effect that makes skin feel 5 °C cooler.

Aqua Soothing Toner: This toner felt cool on skin. It gave me a slight tingle when used directly after foam cleansing, but the sensation subsided quickly. Immediately after application, I could see that my face was a little less red than usual – my forehead and cheeks are normally flushed after showering. When used on skin after oil cleansing, it’s cooling and refreshing without any tingling sensation.

Aqua Soothing Gel Cream Mask: This woven cotton mask sheet has a net-like texture that isn’t as smooth as the usual cellulose sheets. Yet, it’s still rather thin and adheres well to skin – it didn’t really move once it was on my face. The mask itself felt really cool on my skin even without prior refrigeration. Since the sheet was soaked in Aqua Soothing Gel Cream, there was plenty of excess gel left in the packet for topping up my mask as well as for slathering onto my arms, legs and neck. I had the mask on for around 20 minutes, and I could instantly see my skin becoming more hydrated and supple. It also felt cooler and looked less red.

Aqua Soothing Gel Cream: This watery gel-like cream melted into my skin upon application, and gave an instant cooling sensation. I guess this is due to its centella content as this ingredient is often used to soothe and cool sensitive skin. The cream was absorbed into my skin fairly quickly and left a soft, glowing finish with not too much stickiness. It can probably also be used with one of those DIY cotton masks, since the aforementioned face mask was soaked in the same cream.

Cicarelief Serum

What is it? This serum is infused with Vitamin B12, calamine, sea buckthorn extract and centella-calming complex. It can help strengthen a weakened skin barrier while also offering brightening and anti-wrinkle benefits. .

I find the dropper design here rather unusual, as it can only be activated when the cap is slightly unscrewed. The clear serum itself has a glue-like consistency, but it’s watery enough to blend into skin almost instantaneously.

Does it work? Serums usually require long-term use for their full effects to be seen, especially when it comes to skin-brightening and anti-aging benefits. So far, the solution is soothing and moisturizing. Most importantly, I haven’t experienced any irritation or breakouts from using it.

The Verdict

Before trialing all these, I’ve only ever tried Real Barrier’s Intense Moisture Cream. All the Real Barrier products I’ve used so far possess a calming citrus scent with subtle lavender and vetiver root notes that seem to come as part of the patented MLE recipe.

The cleansing oil balm is one of the best oil cleansers I’ve encountered thus far. The only downside is that its balm-like texture could be hard to retain in hot and humid climates, which can cause the oil layers to separate. In situations like this, the cleanser needs to be shaken before use.

The Aqua Soothing Gel Cream Set is pretty good, and a great item to bring along when traveling! The pouch is roomy and seems to help maintain the temperature of its contents; putting chilled products inside should keep them cool throughout the day. There is only one sheet mask, so I reckon it can be used on flights. There is also plenty of room left for your toothbrush and other travel essentials.

The only thing I didn’t wholly enjoy about the Aqua Soothing Toner was the slight tingling sensation that I got when my skin was drier than usual. That stopped me from wanting to use it every day. The gel cream is really nice – it makes my skin feel like it just drank a liter of water! If I have to nitpick, I’d say I’m not the biggest fan of its finish, as it feels a teeny bit sticky.

I don’t think I’ve used the Cicarelief Serum long enough to see any prominent effects, but I do like its interesting dropper design as well as its refreshing finish on my skin. As mentioned before, because of my recurring eczema, my skin is really sensitive and constantly on the dry side, so new products often irritate my weak skin barrier. It’s been a while since my skin felt this hydrated and refreshed.

The products I’ve tried this time are definitely some of the more summer-appropriate items from Real Barrier, since they are all really soothing and not particularly heavy. This selection should suit those with combination, oily and acne-prone skin as well!
