IU, real name Lee Ji-eun, made her debut in 2008, breaking into the K-pop scene with her refreshing sweet voice and ability to effortlessly reach high notes. But don’t let her cutesy appearance fool you – this multi-talented singer-songwriter is a triple threat! Acting alongside fellow idols in the 2011 television series Dream High, IU’s first supporting role as Kim Pil-suk cemented her image as Korea’s sweetheart.
I decided to welcome the first Style Files of the year with a chic, bright but warm outfit that perfectly contrasts the chilly, gloomy weather – and who fits that description better than IU? Since she’s often seen bundled up in snug coats, anyone would want to steal her cozy and cute preppy style. IU has mastered the art of staying comfy and fashionable during her favorite season. Like Sunmi, another K-pop industry veteran, IU’s onstage and offstage outfits have become quite similar as she’s had more control over the reins in her fashion choices.
IU has mastered the casual preppy chic look so a button-up top and plaid skirt are THE essentials. Continuing with IU’s favorite color, I chose a purple plaid pleated skirt with yellow highlights to match her socks. Tucked into the mini skirt is a comfortable white button-up blouse that IU often wears unbuttoned during the warmer seasons.
A loose-fitted coat is a must-have in IU’s winter wardrobe, and this dusty pink piece features a drop-shoulder that accentuates her soft silhouette. Scarves are also part of the singer’s arsenal – and you frequently see her engulfed in one to make sure her throat is protected from the chilly weather so that she can belt out all her hit songs. This white fringed piece features a contrasting running stitch that adds a minimal pattern to the otherwise solid outfit. To stay as warm as possible, I styled IU with a pastel beret that she is often seen onstage and offstage with – of course in her favorite color purple!
The music video for her latest comeback BBIBBI was splashed with vibrant yellows so I added these cute yellow cabbage-hemmed socks to highlight the skirt’s plaid accents. Loafers are also must-haves in a preppy ensemble, and I chose to style IU in a reworked white pair with gold-tone chain detailing and comfortable chunky heels.
If you follow IU on Instagram, then you know that she has a penchant for ASMR as a way to relieve stress. The cute squishy unicorn key chain is a perfect and convenient stress reliever during her travels. Plus it looks like it came straight out of her Chat-shire album!
Despite her small stature, IU loves carrying big back packs and large shoulder bags. This convenient brown faux leather piece can be converted and worn either way!
