Sunmi, a K-pop industry veteran, originally debuted with Wonder Girls in 2007. The Wonder Girls were the first K-pop group to enter the Billboard charts with Nobody and even promoted their album and single overseas in North America. Since its beginnings, the group was known for its vintage-inspired concepts, which continued until its last studio album, Reboot.
After going on hiatus for almost three years to focus on her studies, Sunmi debuted as a solo artist in 2013. She steadily rose to cement herself as a talented individual after Wonder Girls disbanded in 2017, displaying her own take on the group’s signature retro style.
Sunmi is known for having a certain unique vintage vibe that stems from her former group, but also from her own character and personal style. Amazing outfits, eye-catching music videos, unique storylines and unforgettable beats – I have become an “addict” of her whole aesthetic. Her most current music video, for the song Siren, showcases contrasting personas that really encapsulate Sunmi’s unusual but strong stylistic choices.
To create an eclectic vintage-inspired look that is as fun and vibrant as Sunmi, I started with a base of mix-and-match pieces from different periods.
The white ruffled high-neck top is reminiscent of romantic Victorian detailing, while the asymmetric mini skirt offers a 1920s art deco print. Its intricately detailed green and scalloped design also brings a fishy enchantress element to this outfit.
Sunmi is fond of patterns, especially florals. This green wrap belt, which features white and orange flowers, replaces the skirt’s black belt to create a smoother transition between the busy top and bottom.
From her pink bob in 24 Hours to her wavy black locks in Heroine, I have loved Sunmi’s ever-changing hairstyles. However, my favorite so far is her long flowing tresses in Siren. Sunmi is a lover of purple and elongated flowing outerwear, and this purple rib knit cardigan has her name all over it. The cardigan also compliments her super straight hair.
As Sunmi is often seen carrying small handbags, this pastel pink piece is perfect for her and matches the cardigan’s dusty hue. With the long layer and Sunmi’s famous lengthy legs, the round-shaped bag brings in a much-needed contrast to her look.
I love tying a whole look together with small details; this daintily beaded hair accessory incorporates the white embroidered flowers from the belt and adds a dash of boho chic.
Sock boots are on-trend and easy-to-style – no wonder they’re Sunmi’s staple shoes! The boots’ minimalist sleek shape juxtaposes the busy outfit and is a perfect finishing touch.
