Nikki’s Inbox: “I’m Tall and Thin, But Still Feel Big”

I am 17 years old. I’m not a tomboy but also not that girly. I have an inverted triangle body type, which means I have pretty broad shoulders. I love wearing dresses but the problem is that nothing fits me well and nothing flatters my body. I’m tall (170cm) and thin but still broad so I feel big. Compared to other girls who are small and girly, I sometimes feel like I’m male. And that makes me feel uncomfortable, and that I can’t wear girly things and dresses. What to do?

Dearest Abby, I want you to know that even though you feel awkward in your own body, it doesn’t make you less likable, or less of a person. Let’s focus on what you have and what you can do to dress better.

Inverse Triangle? Add Another Triangle

I know that sounds too easy, but actually it isn’t that hard to do. It’s great that you love dresses and want to wear something more feminine. A-lines are the answer to this question, Abby!

As A-line skirts and A-line dresses usually flare out from the hips and are widest at the hem, they help you look more proportional on top and below. Voila, an hourglass figure! The A-line is the most forgiving of all styles, that’s why I always recommend it for any body shape. Just make sure to choose a length that is suitable and comfortable for you, which can be mini, midi or maxi.

Soften Those Shoulders

While off-shoulder tops are off-limits to us broad-shouldered women, that shouldn’t stop you, Abby, from wearing styles with shoulder or sleeve cutouts. The cutouts break the span of your shoulders by showing off skin, or by way of a lining like lace or tulle. Cute details like tonal lace insets at the shoulders are also a great distraction.

Steer clear of boat necklines and off-shoulders as these will definitely put your shoulders in the spotlight.

Define or Add Volume to the Waist

The easiest option is to always tuck your tops into your bottoms, whether it’s a skirt, jeans or shorts. Adding a belt is even better as it puts the focus right on your waistline. So make sure to wear something colorful or textured at your waist. Printed belts are trending right now on YesStyle!

If you’re fond of skinny jeans and leggings, make sure to partially tuck in your tees and blouses and let them poof out a little at the waistband. This is called the French tuck. This softens the tapering of your figure from shoulder to legs, and also slightly balances out your shoulders.

Straight-Leg and Bootcut Jeans Too

I’m pretty sure you still like wearing jeans, Abby, despite your fondness for dresses and other girly styles. I suggest adding flared, bootcut and straight-leg styles to your wardrobe, and even wide-leg pants. The wider hem balances your upper and lower body just like A-lines. Plus, they make your legs look extra-long when paired with wedge sandals!

Being feminine is more than just wearing dresses or skirts all the time. There are girls who prefer jeans and still look great, and women who rock suits better than men. Some feel and look better without makeup and with short hair. That doesn’t make them any less womanly. Embrace your uniqueness!
