Nikki’s Inbox: No, You Don’t Have Broad Shoulders

Ask Nikki

I am not sure what figure shape I have, but my measurements are 32-25-35. Most of the time, I wear dresses as they are pretty easy to style, but I really love skirts of any shape and style! I love this one but I have no idea how to style it. I am pretty self-conscious about my broad shoulders (43cm), so lots of tops don’t look very good on me. I usually just wear a plain black long sleeve T-shirt but it doesn’t really look great with the skirts I wear. Because of this, I stopped wearing skirts entirely … Please help me! I really want to wear clothes that look good on me but I have no idea how to do it. Many thanks!

Josie M., 20/United Kingdom

I definitely agree that dresses are so easy to style, and really make you look elegant instantly. And I can’t question your taste because that chuu skirt is just too cute.

But what’s all this grousing about your shoulders? Do correct me if I’m wrong but you gave your bust, waist and hip measurements in inches, and your shoulders in centimeters, yes? If so, then your shoulders are only 16 INCHES, darling — and that’s definitely not broad.

However, I do respect that you might still feel self-conscious about them so let’s try and find some easy solutions to your dilemmas.

Soften Angles

Aside from avoiding square and boat necklines, you can also look for embellished necklines such as dainty ruffles or sweet bows so the attention is on your neck area rather than your shoulders. In case you want to rock an 80s vibe, please skip the shoulder pads.

I do have to tell you that off-shoulders might exacerbate the width of your shoulders. However, you may opt for shoulder cutouts or sleeve cutouts as skin-baring alternatives. Lace-up sleeves are definitely an attention-getter and there’s no reason for you not to wear them!

A-Lines, Hands Down

I know, I know. I keep saying this but it’s true: A-line silhouettes really do flatter most, if not all, body shapes. It instantly creates a waistline and a more defined shape. Plus, it’s NEVER going to go out of style, because really, who doesn’t want to look good?

You have a 25-inch waist, darling, and you can emphasize it further with a cute belt at the waist whenever your wear a dress or skirt. With spring and summer approaching, you can wear fabric and even straw belts to go with your outfits. For more structured pieces like collared dresses, a faux leather belt or patent version can make your OOTD look even more elegant.

Rock That Skirt!

Since you specified a particular skirt, here are my suggestions on how you can style it!

Go for Secondary Colors

I love that your choice of skirt has a combination of different colors, which makes it ready to match with just about any top. If you have a multicolored piece, you can always pick a secondary color for your top, aside from the usual white or black.

Contrast the Texture

Since the skirt is made of tweed, it has plenty of texture that you can play with. You can opt for a softer look on top by wearing chiffon, silk or satin blouses to have that ethereal vibe.

Match the Fringe

Thanks to its fringed hem, you can still wear this skirt all the way through spring and probably even early summer. The fringe makes it look playful and boho instead of boring, and looks perfect with a light furry sweater, or just about anything that has a similar texture — a clutch, hair tie, pompom earrings or mules.

My last advice for you, Josie, is not to get too fixated on your perceived flaws. There’s more to you than just broad shoulders. Always remember to smile, be kind and confident.

P.S. If you’re sending a question, please don’t forget to include any helpful information about your body type or shape, your tastes or personality. You can include a selfie (link only please) or a photo of your clothes (which I will never publish without pre-approval). Thank you!
