I am trying to get more into dressing like a girl. I have had a very long period of tomboyish phase where all I wore were tank tops or sweatshirts and now that I can afford clothing I’d like to create a more girly style.

I really like the more cute style and I think I can pull it off easily but I really don’t know where to start. I am 32DD and have a height of 4’9. My measurements from top to bottom are 35-31-32. I like comfy dresses, funky shoes and accessories, etc. Where should I start? I am also a bit conscious about being top heavy. I really don’t know what to do with them …

Curvy Enthusiasm

When was the last time you had yourself properly measured for a bra, darling? Months ago? Years? Decades? If you haven’t been measured in a long time, go to your favorite bra store right this minute! Wearing properly fitted foundation garments can bring miraculous changes to how you look — trust me. While being petite makes you look more top-heavy and therefore, self-conscious, wearing the right-sized bra — and I’m not just talking about the correct band and cup sizes — and bra styles can open up a lot of possibilities and flexibilities for clothing. Please do your girls a favor and get measured.

Choose Necklines Carefully

Balance your upper half by choosing necklines that minimize decolletage exposure. Avoid plunging necklines such as deep V-necks, scoop and square necklines. It might sound boring but crewnecks, boatnecks, rounded and jewel necklines are your best options, as well as higher-cut versions of the previous ones. Of course, these will still depend on your comfort level, and the best way to find out is to give them a try.

Be Accommodating

I used to be bothered by my “man shoulders,” but I found a way of dressing to work with what i have. So for your girls, allow for a little wiggle room with your tops and dresses. Opt for relaxed cuts and strategic draping so the garment flows on your body. Choose fabrics wisely and avoid those that cling or are too heavy that they literally drag you down. Large prints as well as embellishments around the chest area should also be avoided. Pleats, gathers, smocking and ruffles aren’t too flattering on top-heavy women, and so are peplum tops.

But you know what works for you? Off-shoulder styles and cutout shoulders! A little skin exposure in the right places can help draw attention in the right way. Adding some asymmetry by way of hemlines, sleeves and necklines can also work in your favor.

A Flair for Flare

For your skirts, dresses and jeans, a little flare won’t hurt. The shape of an A-line skirt helps to visually balance the width on top, and the same effect goes for flared jeans and similar dresses. If you decide to wear shift, T-shirt or shirtdresses, make sure you wear a belt at the waist. It’s all about creating angles and shapes to contrast with those curves! Don’t forget that if you’re petite, a little leg goes a long way. So show off those legs in knee-length skirts and dresses as well as mid-thigh shorts. Always remember to wear heeled shoes — even kitten heels or wedges are fine — in order to boost your height.

Lastly, anoint your newfound feminine style with some tasteful distractions such as statement earrings, hair accessories, perhaps a new hairstyle, haircut and makeup! Make that first step, darling, and the rest will follow!
