Last year was when wearing sneakers to work became okay, backless mules were recognized as the #1 shoe trend, styles from the 80s were everywhere, and Millennial Pink hit the runway. I’m not ready to let these statement pieces go just because it’s a new year.
That being said, the idea of adding a few fresh looks to the rotation always excites me in spring. After some runway stalking, I dare say 2018 will be a fun year if you’re into bright, bold and beautiful pieces.
1. Puff-Shoulder Houndstooth Knit Jacket from UPTOWNHOLIC
Look at those strong shoulders! I’m totally sold on the continuation of trends from the 90s, and I believe big shoulders and sleeves will be everywhere this spring. It almost feels like a collective backlash to last year’s off-the-shoulder looks. You can easily counterbalance this houndstooth topper with a slick pencil skirt and point-toe heeled booties for the perfect proportions.
2. Puff-Sleeve Sweatshirt from GOROKE
The fancy flounce on this understated sweatshirt creates a soft yet dramatic silhouette that feels modern. Tucking it into cropped jeans would suffice for spring.
3. Belted Mini Skirt from ERANZI
As Pantone predicted “uplifting shades and feel-good colors” will dominate this season, I suggest we add a few pieces in one of the key colors: Meadowlark Yellow. Not ready for full coverage? Start with this slick belted skirt that comes with two pocketsful of sunshine. ☀
4. Pleated Yellow Midi Dress from PPGIRL
If a fluidly-tailored dress doesn’t make you feel like the prettiest girl in the room, I don’t know what will. Commit to the Big Bird yellow trend with this breezy midi dress that’ll cheer everyone up even on the gloomiest of days.
5. Pastel Floral Pencil Skirt from CHICLINE
We’ve neglected our feminine fashion soul for a while thanks to the recent comeback of leggings and sweatpants, but the spotlight turns back to pencil skirts these days. Pastels can be just as punchy as bold hues, as seen here on this fluttering style in painterly florals. Perfect for pairing with a crisp blouse.
6. Trench Dress from PLAN.J
One of the easiest and most sophisticated staples to wear, the trench coat continues to stay current, with seasonal updates appearing on almost every important runway. Reimagined as a well-tailored dress, this figure-flattering iteration is one essential I want in my wardrobe ASAP.
7. Raw-Edged Sweater from NANING9
A worn-in way to channel the minimalist look, raw-edged garments in earthy tones are a major source of influence this season. With an effortless laid-back appeal, this subtly frayed sweater flaunts a love for simplicity.
8. Polka Dot Cardigan from NIPONJJUYA
Polka dots are having a major moment. One easy way to work the fun motif into a real-life wardrobe without looking like a 50s housewife is to keep it monochrome and sharply tailored. This comfy cardigan is a good example. Finish the look with edgy accessories to toughen up the girly print.
9. Straight-Leg Cropped Jeans from maybe-baby
Straight leg and crop length are making a major comeback this season. Will everyone be wearing this denim style in the months to come? Anyway, the silhouette has hit the mainstream, and I love how well they pair with sock boots.
10. Thigh-High Boots from chuu
Thigh-high boots are underrated. They’re the shoes you’ve always wanted to wear, but somehow they end up sitting in the corner season after season. In fact, they’re incredibly wearable from fall through spring. You can easily make a statement by pairing them with a tee and jeans. You can even get away with wearing them to work! Just make sure the skirt is long enough to cover the legs.
