JAYJUN Real Water Brightening Black Mask Review

The YesStyle BeautyLab

Don’t be fooled by the name: The JAYJUN Real Water Brightening Black Mask is actually a three-step routine that includes a cleanser, essence and black sheet mask in one pack. The 10-piece box set currently retails for US$24.21 on YesStyle, which means each pack — a basic and complete regimen in itself — costs only less than US$3. A great bargain if you’re a frugal beauty junkie!

What’s Inside

Each pack contains the Real Water Cleansing Foam, Vita Snow Essence and Real Whitening Black Mask. The first two are tear-away sachets that sit right on top of the package like ears, and all three are clearly labelled. The perforations at the sides and bottom of each sachet make it easy to tear them off and stash separately if you want.

The box also includes a little card to help check whether your JAYJUN product is genuine or not. The card includes instructions on how to verify your product in two ways. One is through the M-Check app (now called M-TAG) which can be downloaded in the Google Play Store or Apple’s App Store. The other is with the magnetic strip attached to the back of the card. Each mask pack should have a holographic sticker in front along with the JAYJUN logo. To check, place the magnet strip behind the mask. The dark bronze-green strip should show stripes, like a bar code, and should change appearance as you slide the strip back and forth.

Checking for product authenticity.
Stripes should show up in the tiny window when you place the magnetic strip behind the mask.

Real Water Cleansing Foam (1.5ml)

I almost threw away the cleanser and essence the first time but it’s a good thing I didn’t. The cleanser has a nice whipped texture that foams up well even when I only use a very small amount. I plan on decanting the remaining cleansers into a small container so I can make them last longer.

The ingredients list for the cleanser includes papaya extract and niacinamide, which both have brightening properties. Papaya is also a natural exfoliator, and even though I didn’t use an oil cleanser beforehand, my skin felt clean and refreshed just the same. However, the cleanser’s COSDNA listing reveals a rather high potential for triggering acne and irritation due to having lauric acid, myristic acid and other ingredients. My skin didn’t react negatively but patch-testing is always a must if you’re trying a new product. My remaining concern is the rather heavy scent. If you’re sensitive to strong fragrances or other ingredients in this cleanser, you may want to reconsider.

Vita Snow Essence (1.5ml)

I applied the clear, gel-like Vita Snow Essence right after cleansing. It absorbs quickly and, like the cleanser, the 1.5ml amount is actually quite generous, with enough left for my neck and decolletage. Compared to the cleansing foam, the essence doesn’t have a cloying scent, even though fragrance is included in the ingredients list. The COSDNA listing reveals only two possible acne triggers: butylene glycol (which is present in most skin care products anyway) and carbomer. The product also includes niacinamide high on the ingredients list, along with panthenol, aloe leaf extract, different kinds of sodium hyaluronate and herbal extracts. No wonder my skin loved it!

Real Water Brightening Black Mask (25ml)

I placed the black sheet mask on my face right after spreading the essence all over to seal in every last ounce of goodness. The package contains 25ml of essence that includes niacinamide, panthenol, sea water, aloe leaf, centella, chamomile and other herbal extracts. Among its ingredients, only butylene glycol and carbomer are potential acne triggers, according to COSDNA.

Sadly, the mask doesn’t fit my face very well. Compared to the Kracie Hadabisei mask, the JAYJUN mask barely reaches my forehead and shows sizable gaps around the nose and mouth. Despite the awkward fit, the mask does have flaps for the eye holes. It took some delicate maneuvering to fold and position them under my eyes, without the risk of ripping or having some of the serum entering my eyes.

Not quite the best fit around my nose and mouth but the mask does cover the areas where I have acne scars that need fading.

I decided to leave the mask on for 30 minutes instead of 20 because it’s so drenched with serum that it seemed wasteful to just discard it. I’m glad I did because 10 minutes after removing the mask and patting in the remaining essence, my skin felt soft and a would-be pimple’s redness was reduced significantly. I did see some improvement in my skin tone after using the third and fourth masks. Some small acne scars became noticeably lighter and didn’t need a lot of concealer to cover up, unlike before. My skin also looked slightly brighter.

So is the JAYJUN Real Water Brightening Black Mask worth it? Yes! My skin responds well to all three steps, despite the heavy fragrance, the cut of the mask and some of the ingredients. I love the essence and mask the most but overall, the entire set is good. It’s an affordable option for anyone who wants a minimalist skin care regimen.
