There’s an increasing number of Japanese face masks packed and sold in bulk. Major Japanese beauty brands like Mentholatum, Kose and Utena all have sets containing over 25 masks packed within one container. I actually quite like this idea since it’s more economical and eco-friendly. My question is, will these inexpensive masks be less effective? For a short trial, I picked Kose’s Clear Turn Babyish Deep Moisture Mask, which includes only 7 pieces instead of 25 plus. Still good enough for a week’s travel!
The masks come in a resealable bag which is just perfect for your suitcase. Although they’re all stacked together, it’s still rather easy to get each mask separately. The essence soaks through the masks so there isn’t much left in the pouch. The masks are just adequately damp instead of excessively soaked, so there is no dripping when I take it out. The cotton mask itself is quite thick and stretchable, though a bit too dry for my liking.
The problem is with the fit: The mask has a horizontal oval shape. The excess flaps at the sides of my face are big enough to cover my ears. It also has very wide openings for the eyes, nose and mouth. While the other masks I tried have only slits at the sides of the nose, this one has wide gaps. The chin is also partially exposed. I admit I have a small long face and a long chin, but even for someone with a face as wide as a frog’s, the mask is still inadequate – the oversized cutouts leave too much skin uncovered.
The mask claims to be free from fragrance, colorants, mineral oil, ethyl alcohol, surfactants and silicon. It is also weakly acidic, and contains moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, lipidure, trehalose derivatives and amino acids, along with skin-conditioning ingredients like baby mint and chamomile extract.
Given the low price point, I have no complaints on its effect although I’m a little disappointed that it dries up within 20 minutes under the air-conditioner, instead of the normal 40 minutes or more for some other masks. I convince myself that having a lot of serum doesn’t necessarily mean it’s effective. Anyhow, I feel my skin is more soothed and hydrated. The effect is similar to that of a moisturizing toner. I also like that it’s fragrance-free and non-irritating.
Do I have babyish skin now? No, but maybe in time! This could have been my everyday mask if the fit was better. Now I’ll just use up the rest for my next trip!
