Trendspotting | Kids’ Fashion

When I was a child, I never quite liked the way I was dressed. While I preferred cottony dresses that were comfortable and easy to wear, my mom always outfitted me in beaded, gauzy and velvet frocks that prickled and rustled. On less formal occasions, I had to wear second-hand clothes from my sister. I really didn’t have autonomy of my wardrobe.

Seeing photos of these celebrated children makes me envious, even as an adult. Nurtured by a fashion-filled environment, these kids grew up with myriad choices in outfits, received advice from their stylish parents, and are admired by adults and kids all over the world. How I wish I could turn back time and make my childhood more fashionable!

Alonso Mateo, aged 6

Mateo probably got the fashion gene from his mom Luisa Fernanda Espinosa, who works as a freelance stylist for various high-end fashion magazines. His dad, who works as a financier, is able to support his offspring’s taste for Gucci, Dior, Stella McCartney, Little Marc Jacobs, and Dolce & Gabbana. Mateo’s carefully curated selfies, which feature him in drop-crotch pants and Ray-Ban aviators against stylized outdoor backdrops, have gained a lot of attention on the Internet. His mom says they have fun shopping together.

Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt, aged 8

The first biological child of actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Shiloh wore a three-piece suit and short hair cropped to the ears at her mom’s film premiere. Her parents have revealed that she wants to be called John, stirring speculation on Shiloh’s gender identity. While it’s still too early to judge, Shiloh’s androgynous outfit is definitely a talking point on allowing kids to freely explore their genders and styles.
