Trendspotting | Mastering Sports Luxe

As Hong Kong begins to heat up, it’s time to look for thinner layers and lighter footwear. That’s why I’m turning to the sports luxe trend.

Despite sports luxe trending for a while already, designers have found new ways to reinvent the look. Mesh, flat sandals and sporty silhouettes have been given a high-fashion makeover, and we have Alexander Wang’s sneaker-inspired Spring/Summer 2015 collection to thank. Dior, Burberry Prorsum and DKNY showed off their designer trainers, while the genuine sports brand Adidas Originals is doing a skin-deep collection with singer Kanye West.

Bomber jackets, boxy backpacks and sweatpants made of luxurious fabrics have frequented the high streets in Paris and Milan. These are matched with furry vests, suede boots and leather bags for an upscale finish.

Though casual-looking and cozy to wear, these sportswear-inspired outfits are hardly meant for the gym. Instead, you can wear them on casual dates, to dinner parties or even to work. Now look closely into your closet and dig out your sportswear. Then mix and match like Alexander Wang!

Look 1: Tee + Shirt + Sweatpants
Try layering a crop top over a longer shirt. In addition to tees, also try lightweight knit tops and shirts for textural contrast and modesty. For the bottom, skinnies are the go-to for volume contrast but feel free to experiment with cropped pants and sweatpants.

Look 2: Bomber Jacket + Skirt + Slide Sandals
True luxury is when you can feel at ease in your outfit without adhering to social norms. This bomber jacket, skirt and slide sandals combo epitomizes sports luxe with its laidback style.

Look 3: Long Coat + Harem Pants
This fully metallic jacket from Alexander Wang may be a bit harder to pull off. Opt for this pastel version instead and pair it with tonal harem pants for an edgy spin. Accessorize heavily to bring the “luxe” element to your outfit.

Look 4: Knit Dress + Thong Sandals
Thought T-shaped thong sandals are gone for good? Alexander Wang had the guts to bring them back! A fedora hat and a figure-hugging knit dress instantly amp the style to eleven. Try a sleeveless turtleneck dress with thong sandals. Who can resist this comfy pairing?

Look 5: Jumpsuit + Boxy Backpack + Heeled Suede Boots
Jumpsuits are a great way to channel sports luxe. They give the look a harmonized mood, not to mention that some silky and patterned versions can look truly sexy. Finish it with a polished backpack and heeled boots.

Look 6: Pajamas + Crossbody Bag + Oxfords
This shirt-and-pant set is a borderline case for the trend, but the relaxed fit has successfully lured me to include it here. Despite its resemblance to loungewear, this look carries a high-end aura thanks to the tie-waist detail, leather carryall and loafers.
