Trendspotting | Camo Boys

Similar to Breton stripes, the camouflage print seems to be an everlasting element in the world of fashion, especially for menswear. Though scarcely a dominant trend, the camo print has kept its status as a versatile way to show masculinity and make a statement (despite its original purpose to merge with its surroundings and go unnoticed).

You’ve probably owned at least one camo garment or accessory, be it a cropped jacket, cargo pants or a watch. In this article, however, I would like to introduce this familiar print in a more refined way as demonstrated by Hong Kong actor Nicolas Tse and Korean actor Kim Soo Hyun. Both have recently appeared in public with camouflage outfits from Valentino’s Fall/ Winter 2014 collection.

Tse, who was previously seen wearing a black-and-blue camo suit from Valentino’s SS14 collection, continues his addiction to the brand by pulling off a woodland camo print suit with a half-unbuttoned white shirt during a mid-August event in Macau. Around the same time, Kim Soo Hyun was spotted at the airport wearing a gray camo sweater, black jeans and sneakers from the same seasonal collection of the brand.

So guys, are you ready to give this gentlemanly take on the classic camo print a shot?

1. Outerwear

A functional and modern-looking camouflage jacket can be your statement piece all through winter. Try this lengthy jacket from CRYX, which comes with buckled cuffs and suede-trimmed lapels for a polished look. If you have a slender figure, show it off with a fitted suit jacket and a skinny black tee. The lotus print on this one heightens the camo print to a poetic level. A camo vest on a plain henley is a playful way to look dapper-dandy.

2. Sweaters

Sweaters are cozy and warm, making them a lovely choice for winter. Best of all they’re soft to see and to touch – you probably would prefer to hug a person wearing a sweater than one wearing a rigid jacket. A fitted and thin camo sweater will be a wise investment in the long run. Wear it solo, or layer over a collared shirt for a preppy look.

3. Shirts, pants and shoes

Camo or camo-accented shirts are always a foolproof way to pull off the military style. The only rule of thumb is to wear just one camo item a time. If you decide to wear a camo shirt or pants, complement the print with black denim, suede or leather. Finish with lace-up ankle boots.

4. Accessories

If you’re new to wearing camo outfits, or just new to wearing any print at all, accessories would be the best way to begin. Boring as it seems, a camo messenger bag (ideally with a twist, such as those with non-traditional color combinations) will prove its value when you mix and match. Those unafraid of a more androgynous style can try a tote or Boston bag. Meanwhile, a satchel would create that interesting contrast betweena camo print and a structured silhouette. Camo bow ties and neckties lighten up your look with just the right amount of quirkiness.
