Tony Moly Expert Smoothing Primer Review

The YS Beauty Lab

In my ongoing quest to tame my sebaceous glands, I’m testing yet another face primer: Tony Moly’s Expert Smoothing Primer. Previously, I’ve tried Etude House’s Goodbye Pore Ever Primer Stick and more recently, Shiseido’s Fullmake Washable Base (which is a more of a combo of primer and BB cream, in my opinion).

Tony Moly needs no lengthy introduction. It’s one of YesStyle’s consistent top-selling Korean beauty brands and always has too-cute, eye-catching packaging. The brand’s Expert Smoothing Primer includes lemon balm extract oil absorbers, bergamot leaf extract to soften skin, lotus solution to soothe, and rosemary leaf extract which contains anti-inflammatory properties.

This particular primer is a viscous whitish fluid that comes in a pump bottle. I found that one full pump dispenses enough for one day’s use. The liquid gets absorbed fairly quickly and really helps my sunblock and BB cream go on more smoothly. I was also happy to note that my skin did not react badly to it, and that there wasn’t any noticeable scent.

I bask in air-conditioned comfort for most of the day so I don’t really have any idea how this product will perform under more humid conditions. In my case, the product had more staying power than the previous two I’ve tested. After about five hours, I noticed a slight sheen on my forehead. However, my face felt less sticky than usual (the A/C might have something to do with that). Some quick blotting and touch-ups with powder took care of the shine until I left the office.

The 30ml bottle retails for US$25 which is somewhat on the pricey side. However, the fact that it stayed on longer than I expected tips the scales heavily in its favor. For me, this bottle could last me three months as I use very little makeup. Those who use cosmetics regularly will likely appreciate this too as it works well with other products. The Expert Smoothing Primer is definitely worth buying again.
