The idea of wearing “winter white” has been gaining ground this year. 2013 as a whole has been about throwing the so-called fashion rules out the window, and the old standard of not wearing white after Labor Day was among the first to get pushed out.
Winter white is easy to pull off, and requires just a few styling adjustments from summer. Most of these adjustments have to do with color and texture. Rather than wearing pure white, shades of cream and off-white are softer and more season-appropriate. In addition, cable-knit, waffle-knit and fuzzy knits are all cozy textural options for cold weather, and when done in white, add a somewhat cheery feel to your outfit.
Dress up basics
Everyone has a plain white tee, and this can be put to good use throughout winter. It’s so versatile, and works with practically any look. Rather than just using it as an inner layer, this basic serves as a balanced finish to a plaid A-line skirt and high heel boots when at holiday parties. Imagine it with a faux fur vest and white denims or under an off-white holey sweater. How about with Nordic print leggings and fleece moccasins? There’s a reason this tee transcends time, and why I own seven of them.
Cozy up in knits
Knits in general are cozy, but something about them in off-white or cream paired with brown or cranberry red separates (rather than black) really spell luxury. A sweater with a generous collar only adds to the upscale feel. Team a chunky sweater with high-waist wool shorts, tights and boots for a preppy look, or with ripped corduroys for a contrast finish. Play up the comfy-meets-luxe style by pairing an eggshell sweater dress and camel tall boots with a check wool coat.
With the right innerwear, maxi dresses can be securely winter-proofed. Start with fleece-lined leggings or tights, and a tank top or long-sleeved tee, depending on the weather. With a cropped sweater and black moto jacket on top, it’s easy to still show off a white maxi dress. Over-the-knee boots can add another layer of insulation, or ankle boots are an equally stylish option. Keep up the boho appeal with a slouchy beanie and large pendant or hoop earrings.
