Hear, Hear to Sheer

While summer once meant just a standard tee and jean shorts, the past few seasons have seen gravitation towards wispy, sheer layers. The see-through trend seems to only be getting bigger, and can now be seen on tops, bottoms, cover-ups and even shoes for both men and women.

With all the various layering choices and the ability to choose how much or how little skin you want to show off, sheer pieces can work for the office, nights out and laid-back weekends.

Transparent work. Obviously, sheer works best in small doses when you have to abide by a dress code. Striped translucent cover-ups let wild printed tops peek through and they are surprisingly good at keeping the aircon at bay. Fluorescent ones also add a much-needed pop of color to monochromatic, work-safe outfits. Gauzy cardis are a laid-back choice, while structured sheer blazers are a cool way to conform to dress codes without compromising your personality.

See-through button-fronts with a floral, dotted or heart print give off a youthful vibe when layered over a camisole. Sheer works on bottoms too! Demurely show off some leg with a midi skirt with transparent panels or illusion netting. An underlay that hits above the knee finishes the look.

Sheer fun. Illusion netting is also great for a night out, but this time go for transparent panels that show off shoulders, your abdomen or back for a more overt look. For weekends – whether at the beach, on the couch or at the coffee shop – go for oversized, asymmetric pieces to channel summery cool.

Filmy tops look great paired with crocheted racerback tanks. Crop tops are also back, and you can modernize them with high-waist print shorts and a colorful bandeau. Transparent, colorful hoodies easily inject an athletic flair into an otherwise standard outfit of a tee and cutoffs. As for bottoms, hot pants teamed with sheer, wide-leg pants or a skirt will have you swishing your way around town. Team with a cotton or linen top for a wonderfully rumpled, devil-may-care look.

Clearly manly. Gents, sheer pieces aren’t just for the ladies! Whether it’s a cardigan, button-front or basic tee, these airy pieces allow you to layer even in the hottest weather. Simply teaming a see-through top with a tank elevates the look from gym rat to cool cucumber. Trade the sleeveless top for a rugby striped tee or polo for a more polished finish. Or you could be brave enough to just wear a mesh top solo! Who’s got the guts for this?
