Part 1 of a Special Body Figure Series
The great Yves Saint Laurent once said, "Fashion comes and goes, but style is forever." As each body shaped differently from their genetics, diet and lifestyle, the clothes you choose should correspond to your own unique measurements. Your personal style is about proportions, not size.
This special three-part series covers the most common body shapes for women. Knowing which one describes your body best will help you figure out what works for you. Go for a style that suits both your figure and your personality, and have confidence as your best accessory.
- The simplest outfit is often the best.
- Know your personal style. Are you more of a casual dresser? A lover of the classic look?
- Go for age-appropriate fashion. Don't fall into the trap of dressing too old or too young for your age.
- Find out what colors look best with your skin tone and complexion.
- Accentuate your assets and camouflage your flaws.
- Small frame, under 5'4"
- Short torso and legs
- Necklines. Go for an attractive V-neckline or scoopneck to draw the eyes to your face
- Sleeves. Cap sleeves or sleeveless
- Fabrics. Metallic fabrics and shiny satin work well with your tiny shape
- High-waist styles can elongate your height.
- Cropped or above-the-waist jackets will add volume to your small shoulder.
- A miniskirt with a fitted top shows off your legs and figure to advantage.
- Empire waist dresses with a flared hem puts emphasis on the top than the bottom.
- Wear a one-color dress to create the illusion of stature
- Long pants and high heels can do the trick.
- Shoes. When choosing footwear, go for a simple design and avoid out-of-proportion chunky heels that emphasize short legs.
- Colors. Try colors and steer away from monochrome shades
- Bags. Opt for small to medium size bags instead of oversized ones.
- Accessories. Keep to a minimum to avoid looking cluttered.
- Hair and makeup. Petite girls look good with curly, long hair. Use mascara to draw attention to your eyes.
- Avoid too many competing elements in one outfit.
- Avoid multicolored tiered tops or dresses.
- Full bust
- Wide hips
- Relatively flat stomach
- Necklines. Open necklines on a dress can play up your feminine figure and downplay full hips.
- Sleeves. Short sleeves or three-quarter sleeves show off your arms' length.
- Length. A-line dresses or above-the-knee skirts would be perfect.
- A dark-tone jacket with straight-cut pants exudes a polished and a coordinated style.
- Fabrics. Avoid clingy jersey and similar materials.
- Shoes. Stiletto pumps or a pair with narrow heels convey sophistication.
- Colors. Go for a monotone to create a flattering vertical line.
- Bags. Balance your shape with the right tote size.
- Accessories. Add a stylish belt to create an hourglass look.
- Hair and makeup. Shoulder-length hair and luscious lips emphasized with gloss and tint.
- Stay away from cropped pants and too high necklines or crewneck tees.
- Bulky fabrics that provide too much coverage.
- Designs and details on the bottom such as pockets, that distract instead of accentuate.
