Nikki’s Inbox: The Best Winter Essentials to Look Cute and Stay Warm

I live in Canada, and I’m always freezing during the winter time. Once it gets cold, I always revert to wearing a parka, a giant hoodie and skinny jeans or leggings every day. Since I’m skinny and tall (172cm) and flat-chested, wearing these clothes look super unflattering on me. How do I wear cute clothes while still being warm?

I also can’t afford to buy a lot of new clothes. Are there any winter essentials I can wear and will last me a long time (timeless)?

Jamie, 17/Canada

I hope your New Year celebrations were wonderful, Jamie. And I’m glad you didn’t freeze to death because you’re seriously courting hypothermia wearing only so little! Thus, my first advice for you is to please wear thermal layers. It may sound and look uncool but it will keep your body from freezing. Remember, it’s the only body you got!

No to Oversized, Yes to the Right Fit!

If you’re a regular reader, Jamie, you’ll probably know about my campaign against wearing oversized clothing. Maybe it’s the reason why you look more flat-chested than ever, and you feel it’s unflattering? đŸ˜® Because that’s the effect of wearing clothes that are way too large for you. The only acceptable reason I can think of for wearing a garment one or two sizes bigger than your correct size is because you need to wear layers underneath for warmth and insulation.

Drowning in fabric is never a good look on anyone.

Wearing clothes that fit you in all the right places means you won’t look flat-chested or too skinny. The right size and fit also means that it flatters your body, even if you’re not wearing supportive undergarments. The result? You’ll achieve the cute look you want. Here are some tried-and-tested styles you’ll definitely need in your winter closet.

Stylish, Cute and Warm Leggings

Let’s start with your leggings, Jamie. If you want to wear them even in winter, I’m not stopping you. However, I recommend you upgrade your thin, regular ones to versions with fleece lining. YesStyle has plenty of them because frankly, they really do work. We even have fleece-lined skinny jeans, which give you another option.

How about a third choice? Our inset skirt leggings top the cute list because they’re the easiest thing to wear. The leggings come with skirts in complementary or contrasting colors, and in various lengths to suit your 5’6 frame. But since you have the legs for it, go for mini or knee-length versions. You can wear an extra pair of tights on top in a tonal color for added warmth, or in a sheer, pretty pattern for added dimension.

The Best Base Layers

Wearing a giant hoodie deprives you of the chance to wear nicer base layers. Why not go for knit sweaters? Knit sweaters give you plenty of options to play with texture, color and pattern. A thigh (tunic) or at least hip-length piece looks perfect with leggings or skirt-leggings. You can even try a peplum top to highlight your waist. YesStyle carries mock two-piece knits that combine a shirt with a sweater so you can rock a preppy look without effort. Just style it with a belt of your choice.

Jumper dresses are also a popular winter option that works perfectly with sweaters and sweatshirts. Just like with knits, you’re spoiled for choice. Try them in denim, corduroy, suede, velvet or wool with a classic plaid pattern. They’ll create an eye-catching look with the rest of your outfit!

Haute Outerwear

Sometimes you do have to remove your outerwear for practical reasons, Jamie. But it’s also worth mentioning that a well-cut jacket or coat makes a great first impression, and sets up the rest of your outfit for an awesome reveal. For starters, try a padded vest. The classic style comes with a zip-front so you can wear it open when it isn’t too chilly. Puffer vests are no longer that bulky, which means you can wear some thin layers underneath. There are versions with patterns like camo or florals, and with hoods that come with faux fur trim in candy colors!

The timeless pea coat is another great option with its nautical heritage that’s hard to beat. The double-breasted front, notched lapels, shoulder epaulettes and tabbed cuffs all add up to a clean, elegant look no matter what you pair it with. However, a cute cape might be more up your alley, Jamie. They come in various lengths, thicknesses and textures but it’s the A-line silhouette that’s really flattering. There are poncho styles but I suggest you go for a hip-length cut with arm slits to complement your height.

It’s only the 5th day of the new year. This gives you plenty of time to be bold and try new styles. Lots of luck to you!
