Nikki’s Inbox: A Big Bag Problem
Hey Nikki,
I was wondering what kind of bags would be good for high school – big enough for textbooks and yet stylish?
Thanks!
Rachel, 15, Australia
Hi Nikki,
I wondering what kind of bag I should bring to work? Laptop bags seem too old school for work. Is there a more modern kind of bag that is useful as well as functional? And do we have to match the bag with our attire?
Arwin, 26/Singapore
Seems my dear readers are having similar problems this week. As much as it’s a headache to put together fabulous warm outfits, and to do it with the clock ticking in the morning, often, an even bigger headache lies in finding the perfect bag. The problem in doing so, especially when it’s for school or work, is getting the balance between functionality and style. I love having a range of bags in my wardrobe but I love it even more when I find the perfect one that goes with every work outfit, or in your case Rachel, one that goes with every school outfit and suits every class schedule.
Here are some tips on choosing the perfect bag:
Choose a classic style. Unless you’re the type that likes to change bags on a daily basis or to add new bags to your closet on a monthly basis, pick a bag that’s classic with a few details that make it unique or current. A backpack for example, is something you know will last for a few years, Rachel dear, and one in a navy blue or fire engine red is timeless. Dress it up with different trinkets, badges and pins to really own it and make it yours. The same goes for you Arwin – the briefcase or laptop bag is mostly standard and one in black or shades of black with metallic details offers timeless sophistication.
Choose one that suits your style. It might be that the backpack isn’t your kind of thing Rachel, and you prefer a satchel or a large shoulder bag. Choose a bag that’s comfortable and matches your personal fashion because that’s equally as important.
Now on to your personalized advice, because I’m feeling awfully generous this week!
FOR ARWIN
It would help to know what industry you working in. Does it require formal wear or business casual wear? Are you in jeans and blazers, or sophisticated suits all day long? Here’s a range of items that I think might suit you, from formal to a little more casual, and as you like to say, modern.
The Briefcase.
This is your standard work bag and they come in a much less boxy shape than they used to. The briefcase often looks similar to a laptop bag but is less thick and carries a less structured design. A leather-like finish always looks sharp although plaid patterns are also popular these days.
The Backpack
There are a lot of guys that still prefer the backpack, even when wearing a suit. It’s more commonly seen in North America than in Asia though, I must admit. I think if you choose one that looks structured (not flimsy, floppy or changes shape to whatever is in your bag) and in a sophisticated fabric (canvas or faux leather), the backpack can look a lot more work-friendly than the usual classroom bag.
The Messenger Bag
The messenger bag or satchel is the most common bag used by men in the workplace. The cross-body design is sleek enough that it’s still smart and less casual than the backpack. Anything in a leather-like construction is perfect. Avoid canvas fabrics for this type of bag as they come off as looking more like a bag for the gym (or the postman) than a bag for work.
The Manly Shoulder Bag
Recently, a lot of men in Asia are sporting the shoulder bag. Be warned that this one does get mixed reviews from the ladies though! Some find it sophisticated while other guys I know think it just looks like they borrowed their girlfriend’s bag. Look for ones with shorter arm handles and a more slouchy construction – these tough details ensure no one thinks you’re carrying your girlfriend’s bag.
FOR RACHEL
To be perfectly honest, I think it’s fun to invest in a new bag every year, don’t you? If that’s the case for you too, you only have to worry about bags that will last you a year. What are all the other girls at your school or in your grade carrying, (if you care at all about that!)? Oversized tote bags or cross-body messenger bags are popular at senior years in high school, even though I still think the backpack is the most classic and fun. One thing to note is that carrying a lot of heavy textbooks in your oversized bag will easily injure your back. Remember that while everyone wants to look fabulous, it’s much more important to be comfortable and in this case, ergonomically healthy! Here’s a few of my best picks.
The Backpack
As I mentioned earlier, I think this is the most traditional school bag (that’s good for you back if you’re carrying a lot of books) and I love the kinds in bright colors. They really wake up your wardrobe and add a dose of fun to the school day! You’re in luck, we’ve chosen a few of the most stylish backpacks for you here!
The Oversized Tote Bag
The tote is every gal’s go-to bag – it’s so easy to just toss things inside and pull them out (if you can find them out of the rubble). Animal prints and metallic finishes are very on-trend this year, as are bright colors. I’d advise picking one with a shoulder strap just to offer an alternative way of carrying it. Rootote makes a range that are stylish and very sturdy.
The Satchel
The satchel is popular at a lot of schools but I think they’re not as roomy when it comes to carrying big textbooks all day long. Classic designs are those in solid, neutral colors and faux leather is definitely timeless.
Hope those tips help! What about other fellow readers – what bags are you using for school or work? Let me know in the comments!
