Nikki’s Inbox: Prom Here to Eternity

December 9, 2011 By: Nikki 8045 Views

Hello Nikki! I must admit that I love your answers and they really help. I have a New Year prom at school coming up and want to get my dress as soon as possible, though it’s kind of hard. Last year, I purchased a pink dress with a cute bow from YesStyle which I really love. The problem is, I don’t know which colour and style I should choose this time. Although I want something unique and sweet, the colour is the hardest part. I’m a blonde girl with blue eyes and pale skin so which colours and styles do you think will match me? I appreciate your help and enjoy reading your other posts. Thanks in advance!

Silje, 15/Norway

One of my best friends just invited me to her school’s winter formal in a few weeks and I really would like to go! However, the one thing that’s holding me back from a lot of parties and dances is that no dress ever seems to suit me. I’m 5′4″, with a pretty slim waist and long legs, but a pancake chest which won’t hold up anything. Basically I need a dress that will:

  • Flatter my figure
  • Come in size 0/1
  • Not break the bank (I have to pay for shoes too)
  • Preferably comes white, silver, gold, turquoise or black

It’s asking for a lot, but I have faith in you and your blog, Nikki! Keep up the great work and thanks so much! :)

Mina, 15/Arizona

Girls really do think alike, even when they’re almost 8,500 kilometers apart! Whether it’s a winter formal or a New Year’s prom, there’s nothing more exciting than playing dress-up for a special occasion.

Color Me Jeweled
Jewel tones are the way to go for winter – so think ruby or garnet red, emerald green, sapphire or aquamarine blue, deep amethyst or citrine yellow, to name a few – and with all that gem-inspired palette of colors, there’s really no reason for you girls to not find anything suitable. However, Silje my dear, you neglected to mention your body type and height but I will try to do my best, nonetheless. Mina, it’s wise of you to mention your preferred colors and in that list, I spy turquoise. Now that is one option I can recommend.

And on that note, Silje, since you’re now a bit older, I’d recommend steering clear of the bubblegum colors and going for these more sophisticated and high-gloss numbers. With your pale skin and blond hair, I think you’ll look gorgeous in warm (again, think of the ruby or garnet red I mentioned above) or even cool jewel colors like sapphire and aquamarine. Of course, don’t forget purple!

Classic and Charming
Sometimes, color can also overwhelm so I perfectly understand why black, white and metallics continue to stay strong. The key to standing out despite wearing such classic colors is to look for details. Intricate beading or sequins, cute bows or perhaps adding a vintage brooch or two can make a huge difference in a slinky Little (Color of Your Choice) Dress.

Busted? Don’t Give Up!
Just a gentle reminder to you girls: you will still grow into your body! So don’t despair and think it’s the end of the world when your bra size doesn’t go beyond the first letter of the alphabet. Instead, start investing in good lingerie that boosts your growing girls. If need be, look for bras that offer removable padding (no tissues!) so that you can add some, err, stuffing when you need it the most, like for strapless prom dresses!

If your proportions are smaller on top than from the waist down, some clever camouflage is all you need to rock that party dress! Look for dresses that are embellished at the bust such as those with ruffles, ruching or pleats.

“Play to Your Strengths”
Call me a Potterhead (and I proudly am) but you girls can use the same advice Mad-Eye Moody gave Harry to help him complete the first task in the Tri-Wizard tournament: “Play to your strengths”. In fashion-speak, accentuate your assets, hide your flaws. So if you are statuesque like a model, instead of going for the usual knee-length frocks, go for an ankle-sweeping gown like a goddess.

I can’t list everything here, girls, so you can head over to YesStyle’s selection of pretty party dresses and see if there’s something you like. Also, don’t forget that with every pretty prom dress, you should have an elegant evening purse to match. Don’t even think of carrying a shoulder bag!

Have a wonderful evening, ladies!
