Nikki’s Inbox: Toughen Up

February 11, 2011 By: Nikki 10382 Views

Hey Nikki,

I was wondering, what your tips are for guys who have baby/effeminate faces? I sometimes find it strange to wear certain colors (namely pastel) and certain cuts (such as deep V-necks) which tend to soften my overall look. I don’t want to sacrifice on color (as I don’t want my whole wardrobe to be filled with just bland dark colors), but what types of styles/patterns/clothing items do you recommend to toughen up the overall look of guys like me? I have a slim build and I am of average height.

Thanks!
Will, 20/Toronto, Canada

Willy, my dear, it sounds like what you want is a makeover. Everybody gets days where they get bored with their everyday style and want to look like someone else, like so-and-so celebrity or just change everything. You know what I always say about being comfortable with how you look!

Having said that, what guy doesn’t want to look less average and more manly / cool / like Daniel Craig? Take a closer look Will, most ‘tough guys’ don’t have a particular style – it’s more about the whole look, the hair, the swagger and the manner. Since you have a baby face, any easy way to change your look is to avoid looking any younger or effeminate.

Color Me Softly
Choose colors wisely. Pastel colors are soft and can make you look younger. Pastel blue works well universally while you should be careful with pinks, purples and yellow. Make these baby-colors work by mixing with plaid patterns or by wearing them on your bottom half; a simple black sweater grounds the light pastel color. You can also pair them with business wear without looking too young or effeminate – the sophisticated suit makes up for the soft color.

Bright colors work better than pastels. Bold and electric hues look particularly fun and modern so pick these shades and pair them with everyday bottoms like jeans or khakis. And don’t forget colored chinos: they look cool with anything!

Biker Jackets and Leather
Channel Will Smith in Bad Boys, Donnie Yen in Flash Point or Matt Damon in The Bourne Identity. Biker jackets, leather and workman’s boots dictate a rugged personality when it comes to style. Paired with easy neutral-colored tops or sweaters, they can look insanely cool. You might not need to pull off the assassin-on-the-run style, but trust me, nothing toughens your look more than a biker jacket. The jacket should hit your waist and be a snug-fit; there’s nothing cool about a loose leather jacket. Top off with accessories like aviator sunglasses or a studded leather bracelet.

Don’t Mess with Workmen
If rogue-cop leather isn’t your thing, go for a more casual and relaxed look with denim, plaid and khakis. The classic outdoors guy is tough by default (have you seen those guys in the Marlboro ads?). Pull on fitted neutral-colored tees (white, black or gray), and pair them with khakis and a denim shirt, or a worn-in jeans with a plaid shirt. A denim jacket (shearling optional) and boots will finish off the look.

New ‘Do, New ‘Tude
Spiky ‘do, buzz cut or long hair (to be tied up in a ponytail)? Changing your hairstyle can be a quick way to get a makeover and lose your baby face. Avoid any ‘do that’s “neat” or “clean”, like brushed back or parted. Ask your hair stylist before you make any rash moves with the scissors.

Most importantly Will, be comfortable with the way you look – if you’re not a tough guy at heart, it’ll show through no matter how much James Dean leather you’re wearing!
