Meet Chloooe

Meet Chloooe Mak, 21-year old Hong Kong native but a London enthusiast. PeopleStyle “discovered” Chloooe by way of her LookBook.nu account which featured her photos in different outfits, showcasing her growing love for fashion and her passion for photography. We briefly chatted with this recent Graphic Design graduate of London’s famous Central Saint Martins to discover what makes her life tick.

How would you describe your school experience?

Initially terrifying because it was a purely English-language environment. I felt very different and overwhelmed. Also, there are so many talented students from all over the world, so you’re trying to meet not only the school’s academic standards but also all these other brilliant people and your own expectations. But I survived!

What kind of designer/artist do you see yourself as?

I like interpreting ideas and concepts, rather than just pure illustration, like drawing. Art is everywhere but you’re not limited to just the visual aspect of it. I believe exhibitions should not be limited to an empty room and artwork hung on the walls. Imagination can really take you places. Along with a classmate, I did an exhibit that made use of sounds and smells instead of sights. The exhibit, dubbed Time Machine, required guests to enter an elevator car and wear specially designed sleep masks. Through scents, music, and sound effects, guests “experience” being in a restaurant, on the street or in other locations.

Do you have any crazy or weird rituals you need to do before starting on a project?

What I like to do before start working on something is to think in the toilet or bathroom. I know that sounds odd! But my best ideas usually come while I’m in there which is why I always keep a notebook with me at all times. Some people have magazines or books in the toilet but I have a journal instead.

When you can't think, what do you do?

I find that starting a conversation with other people on any topic, except that one related to what I’m working on, always helps. It kind of jumpstarts the thinking process for me. A bad habit I’m trying to curb is checking art and design magazines for ideas. I find that later, what I read or saw subconsciously emerges in the finished work and that’s never good.

What do you think is the challenge young artists like yourself are facing these days?

I think being original is a very difficult thing to do. Like many others, I’ve had my share of moments when I thought I had a very unique concept but it turns out that other people have had the same idea before, maybe even decades or centuries ago. The thing is, we all learn by copying others or their work, but this proves to be a major disadvantage later, especially for someone in my field. So I’m always exploring different ways to produce original work, something I can really call my own and that people will instantly recognize as mine and mine alone.
