Nikki’s Inbox: It’s In the Bag!
Hello Nikki,
I’m going to college now and I am trying to find the right bag for my classes. I don’t want to carry a backpack anymore, so what kind of bag would you recommend? I would like a bag that has a handle so I can carry it, but also with a strap so that I don’t always have to hold it, especially if it’s heavy with books. Thank you!
Jennifer
Actually dear, I hate to tell you this, but you never do outgrow backpacks. At some point in your life, you’re going to have one or several again – for travelling, camping, etc. However, I do understand why you wish to upgrade from backpack to something a little more grown-up, right? It’s only appropriate of course, because you’re moving up in the academe and what you carry should reflect that!
The I’ll-Be-Out-On-Campus-All-Day Bag
If you plan on being in school all day, chances are you can afford to skimp on style and opt for something a little more functional. An all-day campus schedule can be packed with lectures, study groups, org meetings and maybe a quick varsity practice before heading home. To stay organized, you’ll need a bag that’s large and roomy, and definitely comfortable to carry. There’s nothing wrong with going back to your old backpack, or upgrade it for something a little more college-appropriate. One that can convert from backpack to satchel suits your request perfectly.
The I-Need-It-To-Be-Big-And-Fashionable Bag
Sometimes, especially if you’re working part-time or if your campus is downtown, you’ll want the functionality of the backpack but with a huge upgrade in style. Sporty style, polyurethane zip totes have always been a campus-bag classic and by late August or September, they’re always the first ones sold out. If you’re not carrying too many books, a canvas or faux-leather tote is a great alternative.
The Class-Then-Shopping-or-Surprise-Me-I’m-Up-For-It! Bag
At college, unlike in high school, you’ll find that you might need more than one bag. A smaller than your all-day-everyday carry-all carries the pens and pads you’ll need for a one-hour class and you can take it straight to shopping and movie with the girls. Just make sure it can hold a thin folder (so roughly 14 inches diagonally) or a notepad (10 inches diagonally). Pick one that’s versatile enough to go easily with your jeans or a dress. Faux-leather in black or brown is always a safe bet.
Now then, darling, remember that if you study hard, you can play hard. Best of luck to you!
