Nikki’s Inbox: Do Love Being A Girl

June 28, 2010 By: Nikki 4248 Views

Dear Nikki,

My style has always been jeans, a T-shirt, and skater shoes (even though I don’t skate). I’m not happy with my style at all but I’m very comfortable and dressing that way makes me fit in perfectly with all my guy friends. I’m finally ready to change my style and start dressing like a teenage girl. My problem is that I’m so used to picking out T-shirts and jeans that I don’t know how to pick anything else. I have no idea about accessories or shoes that aren’t Vans, Converses, or DCs. What are some style options that are girly and chic but casual and comfortable?

Thanks!

Alicia

Hi Alicia,

You seem to be the kind of girl who goes for comfort over style so I recommend outfits that are still comfy and easy to wear but will turn you from Skater Boi to Uptown Girl effortlessly! I will (try) not (to) disappoint you! Here are three easy looks that will help you transition from your T-shirt and jeans to an outfit that’s more girl than say, boy-meets-girl.

1. Start the transition – Revamping T-shirts and Jeans

Easing into a new look, why not start with things you’re already comfortable in? Nothing beats a tried-and-tested tee and jeans combo and it can be pulled off to look classic and chic (think Sienna Miller and Jennifer Anniston) or grunge-rock casual (a la Miley Cyrus and the Olsen twins).

Jeans. Opt for skinny jeans or bootleg jeans which are trendy and hug your curves. Dark blue, light wash, gray or black are ultra modern colors and the complete opposite to the boyish flare of mid-blue jeans.

T-Shirts. Choose tees that highlight a feminine silhouette, for example fitted or oversized tees with a V-neck (and back!) or scoopneck. Oversized tees create classic, relaxed outfits because they look subtly draped or slouchy. You may want to style with a belt to cinch the waist and control the volume. Solid colors are favorites, but don’t be afraid to reach for graphic-print or patterned tees.

Outerwear. Kick it up a notch with outerwear that will add nautical, romantic or cool vibes to your outfit. A boyfriend blazer adds instant class to your look, while a cardigan is a modern companion to any outfit.

The Converse sneakers you have are fine (think Kristen Stewart on the red carpet!) but the Vans and DC may be a little too chunky to be paired with skinny jeans).

2. A Different Kind of Casual

Move away from tees and jeans into a different kind of casual – still comfortable, easy to wear and fun. Playsuits and jumpsuits are a great option; they offer the high hems of miniskirts and the breezy, loungewear vibe of shorts. The fact that it’s one-piece seals the deal – there’s no fuss so just slip on and go! Stick to patterns and colors that you’re comfortable wearing, like basic black or neutral gray. Jersey and polyester work great for street-style pieces, while chiffon and lace details are flirty feminine. A light-rinse denim playsuit with ruffles is the perfect mix of the two.

The one-piece works easily with heels for a dressed up look while gladiator sandals or flats are pretty and casual. Your favorite Converse sneakers keep it young and fun.

3. Leave the Skater Boi Behind!

Once in a while, you might want to venture away entirely from all that’s casual and comfortable, and enter into the realm of flirty floral skirts and pretty A-line or pencil dresses. The piece and silhouettes may change but it doesn’t mean you have to go for a fairytale princess look; after all, Avril has grown up a bit and Pink still looks rock-tastic in a dress.

Skirts and skorts. Floral patterns are all the rage this summer and jersey cotton offers easy wear, anytime and anywhere. Reach for a simple skirt, or a wide-legged skort for easy style. Tuck it over a fitted tank top or graphic print tee.

I hope your transformation goes well, darling! I want pictures!
