Nikki’s Inbox: Help! It’s Prom!
Prom is coming up and I don’t know what dress to wear for it. I don’t exactly know what a prom dress looks like either. Can you help me pick out a dress on YesStyle that’s good for this major event? Thank you!
Emily
Oh prom! It brings back such memories, both good and bad. But don’t let me bore you with the lurid details of my prom experience. You’re not the only one panicking over what to wear (and maybe who to go with?). My inbox is positively overflowing with calls for help. When in doubt, I always look to my favorite celebrity styles for inspiration. This trick works for any occasion on any day but especially on a big night like the prom. For most girls, prom will be one of the biggest nights of your life, for the “first ball” factor, if not anything else.
The easiest way to begin your prom planning is to start with a “look”. Set aside a weekend to cram prom-style; flick through magazines or watch prom movies like Never Been Kissed and She’s All That, or reruns of red carpet award nights. Pick a look or at least a mood as your source of inspiration. Ask yourself who you would most like to look like and go from there. A romantic Taylor Swift in her “Love Story” music video maybe, or an edgy and hip Jenny Humphrey?
Bella’s not your typical high school teenager (and not just because she has a vampire boyfriend and werewolf suitor); her style is simple and comfortable. The V-neck, tiered blue dress she wore to the prom is beautiful, making a subtle statement without being over the top. Team it with a bolero to cover bare shoulders and notice the black sneakers as her signature comfy style (also handy when she needs a quick getaway with Edward). The key to this look is comfort over style: stick with solid colors, zero embellishments and minimal jewelry. Steal the look with these items:
After moving from Brooklyn to the Upper East Side, Jenny’s style may have a couple of extra figures added after the dollar sign but the inner wild child still shows in her dress. For a society gala, Jenny shows up in a classic and flirty strapless dress. The key to this look is edgy, classy and glamorous – show some skin in a lace or subtly embellished, strapless dress. Balance the high hem with black stockings and patent ankle booties to add drama and Upper East Side class to the look.
Red Carpet Style a la Yoon Eun-Hye
Although a little more mature, red carpet styles are always a favorite when it comes to prom inspirations. Red carpet hairstyles, red carpet dresses, red carpet bling-bling, red carpet carpets, you name it! To pull off this award-winning look, a designer gown is best. Yoon Eun Hye’s dress shows off her youthfulness in a deep-V cut with wide gathered straps and a long ruffled train she holds up to show off her legs. The navy blue is demure and younger than other colors like a bold red or champagne peach. High-heeled sandals, silver jewelry and an updo elevate this look.
Tell your date what you’ll be wearing in advance so he can complement your style.
Have a fun time!
