Nikki’s Inbox: Gloomy Days, Go Away!
Hello Nikki,
This whole week has been raining cats and dogs and the gloomy gray weather has disrupted my regular school outfit. I want to add some bright colors to my wardrobe to brighten it up. I’d like to hear what you have to say please!
Sophie
Hi Sophie. I know exactly what you’re talking about! The rainy season on this side of the world means we often get stuck with cloudy weather coupled with anything from a few rain patches to rainstorms so I’m always on the lookout for things that will brighten my outfit, while still staying weather-appropriate. It can be a real challenge I tell you!
Bright colors are a great way to solve this dilemma. They’re eye-catching, easy to work with and are an instant pick-me-up! The whole thing can be as simple as adding one colorful item to an outfit of neutrals: a bright yellow dress with a light gray trenchcoat, blue satin pumps and clutch with an all-black ensemble of black jeans or green leggings with a beige tunic dress. If you’re only looking to add a splash of cheer, the key is to keep it simple and add only one colorful thing at a time.
Easy dresses
Just-pull-it-on tops and bottoms!
If all that rainbow brightness isn’t always appropriate for the occasion, work with bold separates that don’t take away from your neutral-toned outfit. Accessorize with a pair of dark magenta suede pumps, a fiery orange cocktail ring or a quilted yellow tote bag to make your look pop.
On days you’re feeling really restless and wild, come up with a crazy color palette that’s far from your usual neutrals and monochromatic black and white. Simply combine the crazy colors to create a psychedelic outfit! Pick colors that contrast (but not in a way that hurts the eye!); think yellow dress with green, pink or purple tights and with bright blue pumps.
Hope your new outfit cheers up the gloomy days for you!
