Nikki’s Inbox: Swinging Back Into the 60s
Hello Nikki!
I’m a 15-year-old girl who desperately needs your help. We’re having a school party in April and the theme is 60s fashion. I like dressing up, but right now, I’m clueless. I’m very short by the way, and I don’t have much of a figure. Can you please help me find out what kind of 60s style would look good on me?
Julie
Whoever thought of your party theme is cool! If you ever heard your mom sigh and reminisce about her teenage years in that era, cut her some slack. The 1960s were awesome. And no, I wasn’t born during the 60s.
In case you’re wondering what made this decade so wonderful, there are a lot of reasons! The miniskirt, bell-bottom jeans, The Beatles (and not just because they’re now a video game), false eyelashes, beehive hairstyles, flower power and hippie looks were the norm.
You may only know Jackie Kennedy from your history books and Audrey Hepburn from all those blogs and prints that carry her classic image from the film Breakfast at Tiffany’s. But I’m telling you that these women were uber popular in the 60s, so much that they’re now icons for that era. So the answer to your dilemma is in these fashionable dames!
“Oooh” with the Jackie O Look
No, it’s not just the oversized sunglasses that you should have. The late former First Lady was known for her sleek sheath dresses combined with boxy jackets and iconic pillbox hat.
Go Holly Golightly
Say “Audrey Hepburn” and her role as Holly Golightly in the film “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” instantly comes to mind. The “Holly Golightly” look is both glamorous and fun, with the slinky LBD, cigarette holder (you can skip this one, darling), sunglasses and updo. And of course, that irresistible sparkle that makes this style very, very timeless.
Both Jackie and Holly were never without their accessories – pearls, gloves, hats, bags – and you shouldn’t be, too! Authenticity is what you want to pull off so make sure you’re properly attired and accessorized. Don’t forget to make sure that your hair fits your look as well.
The key to making these looks work is having confidence. Play some 60s music or go watch “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” or Hairspray. If you’re brave about it, you can also ask your mom. I’m pretty sure she’ll get a nostalgia kick out of helping you look put together. Best of all, have fun! I want pictures!
